(Vapenews, ind. web site) Electronic Cigarettes Affecting Nicotine Replacement Therapy Sales | E-Cigarette Reviews and Rankings [report on NRT sales in Europe]
But while tobacco companies seem to have found a way to cut their losses, and maybe even increase their profits, major players from the pharmaceutical industry have been hit badly by the vaping revolution. Giants like GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the maker of Niquitin products, are struggling to compete with electronic cigarettes, which smokers trying to quit seem to find more appealing. In France, the latest data shows nicotine replacement product sales have dropped by 6.6% in 2013, putting the total market turnover at under 100 million euros (99.2 million, to be exact) for the first time since 2010. Sophie Ragot, marketing manager at GSK laboratories confirms the latest figures, and adds that the situation of the NRT market in the last quarter alone is even worse. She claims sales in this time frame have dropped by 17% in general and 35% in the case of nicotine patches.

(Stanton Glantz's blog; not specifically applicable to vaping but may apply in the future) www . tobacco . ucsf.edu/blogs/sglantz [highlights Surgeon Gen'l's report request (?) for MPAA motion picture ratings change in newspaper ads sponsored by the usual suspects - see blog for link to ad:]

It has been suggested that the movie industry modernize the Motion Picture Assn of America voluntary rating system to eliminate smoking from youth-rated films by awarding any film with smoking or other protobacco imagery an R rating (with exceptions for real historical figures who actually smoked or films that depict the dangers of smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke)."

(Does this mean that Casablanca's rating should be changed from "PG" to "R?" What about Citizen Kane's "G" rating? It's hard to figure out what's meant by "Youth rated," althogh this phrase is often used to denote ratings of "G," "PG," or "PG13." The MPAA does not appear to recognize this term http://www.filmratings.com/downloads/rating_rules.pdf . It turns out that the quote comes from p.907 of the Surgeon General's report at www . surgeongeneral . gov/library/reports/50-years-of-progress/full-report.pdf which cites an article by Glantz and Polansky located here: tobaccocontrol . bmj . com/content/21/6/569 behind a paywall, which I didn't read. Fig 14.3B on p.810 of the SG's rpt. is taken from that article, and confused both me and a media rep. from SG's office, regarding the meaning of the term "youth rating" ... does it refer to a proper subset of "G," "PG," and "PG13" or to all three? In fact neither of us could figure out whether the SG is actually recommending such a change in policy by the MPAA. What seems clear, however, is that the term "youth rating" is probably Glantz & Polansky's construct. And given the MPAA's rating structure, it's hard to understand why anyone would recommend that a movie with one of the three ratings be re-rated to "R," while the very same movie with another of the ratings would not be.)

Update: as of 10p ET no one from the SG's ofc has called me back after 12 hr.s. Looks like they don't know either. But the ad is running, I believe.

While some landlords are quick to lease space to e-cig sellers to help fill vacant space left by the recession, others are reticent to rent to smoke-shop types of businesses. This one has old grumpy SG written all over it. I bet even the first commenter's ISP links right to UCSF.

Poway to consider banning e-cigarettes - Pomerado News | Pomerado News

It really needs factual comments, to better arm the residents of that poor town, before the Feb. banning date.

Porway is not proposing complete ban. Article is badly-written & you're correct to note that it's full of Stanton Glantz crud + other junk science.
