Anyone else catch this, we are now being thrown in with other mean, evil, nasty people. I wish they would start giving glANTZ his proper title, mechanical engineer, in stories like this.

The letter was organized by tobacco scientist Stanton Glantz of the University of California, San Francisco, and others. One signatory did not want to be named, explaining in an email to Reuters that "I and my family have been receiving abuse and threats" over his critical stance on e-cigarettes.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery :)

My first thought was indictment for crimes against humanity.

Brilliant! 50 years of lies, corruption, and abuse from the TCI have caused immeasurable suffering and the smoking-related death of tens of millions of smokers who were denied access to and were lied about safer alternatives to smoking.

The neener-neener response: Quantity over quality. "I got more people to sign my letter than yoooooouuuu."

I also find it quite ironic that the letter bemoans the entry of tobacco companies into the e-cigarette market,

By moving into the e-cigarette market, the tobacco industry is only maintaining its predatory practices and increasing profits. As stated in the guidelines for Article 5.3 of the WHO FCTC, there is a “fundamental and irreconcilable conflict of interest” between the tobacco industry’s interests and public health’s interests.”[6]

and then advocate regulatory policies with which only the tobacco companies could afford to comply.

Such a regulatory framework would require manufacturers to present safety and efficacy data. In this case, the use of these products as cessation aids (if the evidence supports such use) would operate under the supervision of a health authority that could control manufacturers’ claims, impose health warnings about risks, require disclosure of ingredients and safety data and regulate product engineering as well as mandate surveillance.

Such policies would have the effect of driving all of the independent small-to-medium sized companies, which have no history of predatory practices, out of business. This is an inconvenient truth, which they conveniently ignore.

And another instance of a gov't action (and those who promote it) getting 180 degrees opposite of what was intended - Possible increase in smoking and more harm vs. less smoking and harm reduction. Creating a monopoly or a cartel vs. small mom and pops. And loss of the "middle class" and jobs.

But the tobacco companies are so much easier to portray as evil incarnate. A local mom & pop shop could invoke sympathy, tougher to stamp out. Their ultimate aim is still to wipe out all tobacco products, you need to quit or die.

They say that... but their actions with regard to eCigs demonstrate a support for traditional cigarettes and tobacco companies.

The ACTUAL truth is that they need big tobacco, they have no interest in wiping it out. They would be destitute if they did.
Likewise, they have no interest in finding effective alternatives to traditional smoking cessation products, eCigs upset the status quo.

you need to quit or die.

you left out option 3... their Preferred option:

Attempt to quit using expensive Big Pharma products, Return to smoking, Attempt to quit using expensive Big Pharma products, Return to smoking, Attempt to quit using expensive Big Pharma products, Return to smoking, Attempt to quit using expensive Big Pharma products, Return to smoking, Attempt to quit using expensive Big Pharma products, Return to smoking, Attempt to quit using expensive Big Pharma products, Return to smoking, Attempt to quit using expensive Big Pharma products, Return to smoking, Attempt to quit using expensive Big Pharma products, Return to smoking, Attempt to quit using expensive Big Pharma products, Return to smoking,

Then die younger and save them from having to use some of the exorbitant taxes they have collected for your long term care. We pay much more and receive less.

eta:
I mean look at my signature, at $1.11 a pack federal tax that's ~ $4260 that uncle sugar has not collected from me.

@ClippingWings and NorthofAtlanta:

yup. You are telling it like it is.

And 3.650 Euro here, at 4 Euro cigarette tax a pack and 2.5 years not smoked at one pack a day. That is 4942,37 bucks since 4 Nov 2011.
Yeah... me baaaad :sneaky:

Oh, and as I like to say: "Just because the government has already included the cigarette taxes in its budget, that is no reason for me to take up smoking again" :p

.........
I took a look at the signatories and found it interesting. Now we have WHO staff writing to the WHO?

That one is an employee of the WHO staff office at the DKFZ in Heidelberg:

Dr Martina Pötschke-Langer MD MA
Head of Unit Cancer Prevention and of
WHO Collaborating Centre for Tobacco Control
German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)
Heidelberg
Germany

also see here: http://www.zukunft-praevention.de/2010/101020poetschke-langer.pdf

3rd line under the name:
WHO Kollaborationszentrum für Tabakkontrolle = WHO Collaboration Center for Tobacco Control

So we got WHO staff signing a letter to the WHO. Interesting indeed.

That female is
- the German Stanton Glantz
- the author of the "anecdote" about allegedly being in a room where two e-cigs were smoked (sic!) and allegedly suffering "irritation of the breathing apparatus" and "a feeling of dizziness". That crap went viral all over the media as an alleged "scientific experiment" (duh..) until she was pressed into admitting that she made it all up
- the author of the lie that glycerine is allegedly an oil and can thus allegedly cause lipoid pneumonia (see here)

I agree: we now have a list of the most vicious ANTZ on the planet.

I always feel good after reading items like the letter from Glantz (linked in OP), knowing that I am smarter/wiser than some scientists who have doctorates. It also routinely makes me think that the way the scarecrow at end of Wizard of Oz got his diploma is probably not that far off from reality that we all share.

Problem is Slantz is no scientist, just a mechanical engineer that found a much more profitable gig.
