Jode, I hope you know that when I disagree with you, it is in the same spirit as when I disagree with my best friend - with very much respect!! She and I have the most invigorating conversations, because we have such different opinions on many things, but we can discuss the differences with respect for each other!

You are one of the nicest, most level-headed people I've met here (there's some others in this thread too). Sometimes I'm amazed at your cool-headed replies in some of the more politically- emotionally-charged threads.

I hate to hear about your daughter being discriminated against. I am sure she is a strong and confident woman though, and something will work out. I hate discrimination of all kinds - except discrimination against jerks!

Of course I get it and I too love a good debate with different minds all adding to it. Thanks so much, that respect is in reverse as well :). I didn't mean my response to come off as "You won" hahaha, but your words did remind me that I wasn't considering the discrimination side of wages so I had to correct myself. I had actually found myself in a side conversation with a poster (won't say who) that was quite upset that they were not being backed in a heated debate. I don't know if I made sense to them or not but I told them that I always try to remind myself that I don't know the person posting or anything about their life really so I try to temper my posts with that in mind. I would never want to hurt a person I did not know just to get my own thoughts across. But it has happened due to words being flat or heat of the moment type responses that DO get me in trouble at times. If we all thought the same way....what a boring world this would be.

My daughter, Nicole, has actually recently graduated with her dental assist degree on top of her degree in Deaf Studies with Interpretation as a main focus. She graduated with high honors and is a very hard worker. She had several job offers to pick from before she even got her testing done so needless to say I was beyond proud. She balances being Mom to two with her work nicely. I know this will sound a bit weird but sometimes I think the hard times (discrimination, rejection, and sometimes failing) is what makes us stronger. Of course my heart cried every time she felt that she would not be able to do something because of what somebody said, but she always found a way to make it right and show all that she would rise above. So many questioned her choice with dental because of the masks, but she is highly sought after because she can communicate with other Deaf patients when needed and has worked out hand signals (non traditional signs) with the Ortho she works with so the mask poses no problems at all. With her CI (cochlear implant) she functions as a person with a mild hearing loss so many times she needs to help me with hearing as I have a severe/profound loss and cannot afford hearing aids. Where she runs into problems is that people see her as hearing and forget that if her batteries go dead she goes from hearing to Deaf in a moment. Boy, I have rambled on. Can you tell I am proud of my girl!!:wub:

Redrebel as a teen I worked at a Chinese restaurant too. Awhile later new owners took over and they were looking for a babysitter for thier two young children. I happily volunteered to take that job rather than work at the restuarant.
I am a greaat hostess for many guests at my own house NOW. But at 16 I was not the best waitress in the world.
I was the youngest and some of the older waitresses were mean to me.

You should be so proud of her! She's accomplished so much in a world that can be cruel to anyone with a disability. I used to work with a married couple who were both profoundly impaired...her from birth, his from an accident and used hearing aids. She could read lips, he couldn't. I hate to admit it, but watching hem fight was worth paying admission. He'd think she missed him saying something, but she'd read his lips and he wasn't fooling her. He'd turn down his hearing aids and it annoyed her beyond words. They go at it in the break room, and forget we COULD all hear them. Then they'd both get so agitated and start signing frantically at each other. It usually ended when she'd just throw her lunch at him and they'd both start laughing.

That reminds me of a funny story! Once a girlfriend of mine came over for dinner (I was married to #2 at the time), and we were making spring rolls. I had a whole package of Idunnohowmany won ton wrappers, we fried up all the filling stuff and had it in a big bowl, fired up the wok and put oil in it and started wrapping and frying the rolls. We ate EVERY SINGLE ONE of them as they came out of the wok. I kid you not, there was not one single spring roll left for dinner when my husband got home. "Ooop, sorry, sweetie, we ACCIDENTALLY ATE THEM ALL!" So we went out for dinner that night and hubby ate while my girlfriend and I, who couldn't stuff another bite in, just had drinks. That was so funny, and he was SO MAD AT US! LOL!

Lol...the place I worked at was small, just him and his extremely pregnant wife. She couldn't be on her feet all day, so I ran, she worked the register. I haven't made homemade egg rolls in forever, but I did find some frozen pot stickers I could livein recently!

Jode I missed your post about your daughter so I am glad that Kattmamma quoted it.

I am absolutely furious to read that your daughter was discriminated against. I have no idea what her field of work is but if it was anything that my husband needed and was hiring for in the park .. If she was qualified he would hire her without a second thought.

Thank You!! She always rose above those that were closed minded and didn't want to put any effort into finding a solution. My Nicole is an incredibly smart advocate, but sometimes it just isn't worth pulling out the ADA card if you know what I mean. When I have been faced with similar situations, like years ago when I worked for Macy's I told them I could not use a regular phone with no TTY, but they kept insisting if I tried harder and just asked people to repeat that I would do fine. Hahaha, also comments like "Oh we all have trouble on the phone". It's just not worth the struggle to work for somebody that doesn't get it. She has since found her niche in the world and I get to be home with my beautiful grandchildren.:w00t:

For good reason! I know adversity builds character, but it also takes a good teacher (mama) and a willing student (child). Way to go Mama!! :)

I make homemade eggrolls
Glad to know there's so many cooks in this thread - and at least one that is more adventurous than I ever was - egg rolls? wow!

Yummmmm....we have a buffet close by that we love. They just recently added egg foo-young, but had no gravy. I was so bummed! After I got out of the Army and moved back to MN briefly, I waitressed in a Chinese restaurant. The pay was crap, but he fed me... Fed me very well...did one of the best egg foo-young I have ever had. And every night, when I clocked out, he'd send me home with a huge container full of either special fried rice or lo mien.

Please go into that buffet and tell them it is a travesty to have the foo with no gravy. Oh the horror:shock:

Lol...oh, I did...he he he...I bet it's out next time we go in! We usually go on Friday nights, it's the one day hubby gets home at a decent time. We've missed it the last few weeks because he's trying to get someone new trained and ready to work on her own.

Oh, man, I would KILL for some Chinese takeout! I haven't had any in nearly 12 years! I can MAKE Chinese food, and I'm actually pretty good at it, but it's a lot of work, and the cleanup is so tedious. Someday, when we live in civilization again, that's going to be one of the VERY FIRST THINGS we do is order Chinese takeout! OMG, my mouth is watering... pork fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, fried shrimp, chow mein, egg foo-young with gravy...

~Lannie
Boy, you must be really remote. I don't think I have ever found a town or village, no matter how small, that didn't have at least one Chinese restaurant or take out place.
