I certainly do not see a situation at any time in history where everyone, small and great, could not buy or sell without using cash. With the use of credit cards and bank accounts with computers, we are in a time where buying and selling can be done entirely without cash.

Though it is possible that a physical mark be taken like a chip. I myself see a mark more as a sign that can take on many forms but it will be clear in specific aspect, it will be against all that is G-d and G-d's. It will either be taken openly and willingly or we could be convinced tricked to adhere to certain rules/laws etc.
