A 5v passthrough usually dose not contain an internal battery. It can reach 5v because there is no internal resistance and pulls max power from the usb port. On older computers and off hubs it may even pull less than 5v if the port itself dosent output that high. At 5v a 2-3ohm carto or atty is appropriate. The lower the ohm the hotter the vapor of course. I enjoy 3ohm at 5v.

The safest way to run a 5V is a 2000mah wall wart. Most computers don't have the output power to supply a 5V PT...and some folks don't know how to check their computers so it's safest to run it off the wall wart. For 5V, standard resistance (2.8ohm and higher) is best.

3.7V PT's can be ran from the USB ports safely. For one of these, I use LR cartos.

I built my own (computer) so I know it can deliver, and use my eGo passthru on it almost constantly.
But even if your PC isn't putting out the volts you need it shouldn't effect the PC, just the PV performance.
I could be wrong, if so someone please correct me.
And if in doubt, listen to hairball (she's VERY smart :))
