Ive been using this strategy for some time that seems to work well for all my tobacco recipes. I divide a recipe into 4 levels (base, mid, top and finishing notes) and the percentage of flavor used decreases as the level goes up. It works something like this...

Base Note - Provides main body of recipe, these are the RY4's, 555's, Flue/Fire Cured, etc. Use these at the highest percentages of total flavoring content 5-10%.

Mid Note - These notes offset and compliment the base note with other flavors. Things like vanilla, caramel, dulce de leche, hazelnut, and the seedman tobacco additives are at this level. Use one or more of these at medium percentages 2-5%. Seedman are considered a top note for tobacco leaf but seem more appropriate to use at this level for vaping.

Top Note - Completes the mix with hints of tobacco, nutty and/or sweet flavoring. At this level are things like tobacco absolute blends, acetyl pyrazine, and ethyl maltol. Use these in light amounts 1-3%.

Finishing Note - The unicorn tears and butterfly farts that Hoosier speaks of. These (sometimes optional) things like MTS, bitter wizard, apple cider vinegar, m-type (tabanone), linalool, or other individual tobacco molecules can make a recipe come out just right. Use these sparingly at the lightest quantities (less than 1%).

Using this method, its difficult to go too terribly wrong with a tobacco recipe. The percentages given here are not set in stone, and only used to give a general idea. Know your flavors and the strengths they like to be used at, and find creative ways to combine them. Have fun mixing, and I hope you enjoy vaping your creations as much as I do mine.

I'm new at all this. I bought RY4 Double, M-Type and some Smooth from FA/PA what/whoever they are. Any suggestions for toning down the caramel in the RY4? I'm afraid to even tackle the M-Type after all the negativity towards it that I've read.

I have several ry4's here and theyre all different as far as strength and amounts of caramel, sweetness and nuttiness, but I love them all. If youve never mixed with a flavor before, mix a small test batch with just that flavor by itself to give you an idea of what that particular flavor tastes like. If the standalone flavor naturally has a lot of a certain note to it, youll know not to add more of other flavors containing that note, as it will only make that aspect of it stronger. The m-type is something I would only add in very small quantities, and only after understanding how strong it is and what it tastes like by itself, what everything else tastes like without it, and whether I thought that adding it would improve the overall recipe. m-type as a standalone or base note wont do you much good.

With the TPA RY4 double, I like using Seedman Commercial as the mid-note, and some tobacco absolute and acetyl pyrazine as the top-notes. This is a really nice vape as-is that doesnt need a finishing note.

DRY4 is an overly sweet flavor to begin with, with a very heavy caramel top note. So what your tasting is correct for that flavor. I use 3 - 4% DRY4, 3% tobacco absolute and accent it with 1% AP. Then to give it a brightness I use 2 - 3% koolata.

If you want something less sweet with not as pronounced caramel taste use TFA's regular ry4 or hangsen ry4.

Tks, I don't have much in the flavor department at the moment, so I used what little I had to mute the caramel. I added a couple drops of "Smooth" and a bit of sweet cream and that made it much more vapeable...but then I suppose I completely altered what most seem to like about the RY blend. I'm seeing that I don't particularly care for caramel or at least not a dominate note of caramel.

Blueser, if you like the Ruyan tobaccos but RY4 is too sweet, maybe try the other RY's by Hangsen. RY3, RY2 and RY1 are each progressively less sweet. Theyre all really tasty, RY1 is a definite favorite.

His issue was the dry4 from TFA which is much sweeter then any of the hangsen ry's. He would do better with the hangsen ry4. But you are correct ry1 - 3 are less sweet then the ry4 with the ry1 having little to no sweetness.
