Thanks hoogie...I'm very excited about this. Got my Rough Stack on the 11th and so far I'm loving it. Ordered 3 volt batts...came with 3.7(which is cool because 7.4 was someting I was going to do anyway) But 7.4 really kills all flavor. It's nice and warm(hot) but no flavor. ordered the lifepo 3 volt batt and charger package, should be here monday, and am really excited about that but I've done 5 volt and loved it. Didn't find 5 volt to be overpowering and am hoping 6 volt is even better.

?. Will this be a single batt? What logo(manufacturer) will be on these? Will these require a dedicated charger?

Thanks in advance.....madvapes has become my main go-to. You guys rock.

Yes! They are 4 1/3 A NiMH cells all shrink tubed together. They run at about 4.8 volts and last a good long time..

Sounds similar (and perhaps identical) to the 5V custom batteries sold by electronicstix for the Mako Maksi. Four 1.2V nimh cells stacked in a plastic shrink wrap, light green colored. 400mAh total capacity.

They're well-manufactured, nice batts. Nominal voltage is 4.8V, but they charge to 5.6V initially, quickly settle back to 5.1V, then gradually diminish to 4.8V.

If these custom batteries had a number designation, they'd be called 14650s, since they're 14mm in diameter and 65mm long. They work beautifully in 18650 tube or box mods. I always use them in my Phidias wooden bottom-feeder and sometimes in my Omegas and MaxiRoughStack tubes.

Most 18650 Li-Ion batteries are actually 1-2mm longer than their designated 65mm, presumably because of the protection boards, so these 5V custom batts are a little shorter than 18650s. They usually fit, however, and work with spacers or washers when they're a tad short. Since they're 4mm slimmer than 18650s, I made tape-wrapped cardboard tubes they slide into to increase their diameter for a more snug fit in the battery slots.

At only 400mAh, these babies can't be expected to provide long vaping runs before needing to be recharged. 3-4 hours of moderate vaping at best. In my experience using them, performance doesn't gradually deteriorate, however. They vape nicely right up to the point of exhaustion, when they just quit all at once. They have no over/under protection cutoff circuitry, but, since they're NIMH chemistry (safer), don't need it.

And yes, they do require a special low-drain charger. A full recharge takes 4-5 hours per battery, so having multiple backups is effectively required. I own five of them. The relatively brief run times don't bother me at all, though. I like them.

hoog, you're driving me crazy !!! :)

so I ordered the V2 long body, and has a couple 16340 in the cart along with some 18650. Dropped the 16340s, as I perfer 5V max anyway with the attys and cartos I have. Now I'll have to order again when you get 5V batteries in stock, and there's no way I can go on your website and only order one item.....

have you considered a "notify me" function for new, soon to be released items,
instead of just out of stock items??:laugh:

Is there an ETA on the 5v? -- I'm using the dual coil cartos at 6v and they're great that way, but I have to remember to take super short draws (even shorter than I did analogs). So, I'm sort of excited to get a 5v option for my tube mods.

By the way, the rcr123a 3v kit is nice. They charge pretty fast and deliver as expected. Will you be selling these lifePO4 3.0v batteries separate from the charger?

These are actually 1/3 'A' cells so the width is 17mm which is nice for fit without having to use any tubes. Capacity due to the size is about 600mah.

hoog

hoog,

Cool! Yours sound even better than the Mako Maksi ones I was describing---bigger diameter (no cardboard tubes needed), and 600mAh for a bit more punch and more longevity. I'll look forward to your getting them in stock!

electronicstix states theirs are the same size as an 18650. hoog says its 17mm. i think ill be pushing my luck to fit this in my GGTB, anyone tried this? long-shot i know...

NewUnit, you must have mis-read the text on the electronicstix page: "this battery is the same size in dimensions as the 14650 battery." 14650, not 18650.

In battery lingo, the five-digit number classification is a code: The first two numbers always show diameter in millimeters, while the second two are the standard length (without a protection board, which adds 2-3mm to the overall length). 18650 means 18mm in diameter, 65mm long. A protected 18650 is likely to be 67mm long.

So, according to hoog, madvapes' 5-volt nimh batteries will be 17650s.

nope. electronicstix sells two batteries. one is 400mah utilizing 4x 1/3AA batteries, they claim size of a 14650. the other is 600mah utilizing 4x 1/3A batteries, they claim size of 18650.

madvapes is to sell the latter, they claim to be the size of a 17650. the GGTB will fit a 17670, but it is a rather tight fit, and the ultrafire 17670's do not fit very well. the side threads tear the casing causing the battery to short. AW 17670's fit though.

depending on price, which im sure will be low, ill be getting one on a future order:) if nothing else, it'll fit in the chuck! i really want some regulated ~4.5v batteries. that would be killer.

NewUnit,

Sorry. You're absolutely right. I clicked on an old link I had for the Mako Maksi battery and so didn't see the new larger 5V battery for the Meglodon. Ah, choices!

I agree with you that 4.5v is the heart of the sweet spot (notwithstanding all the variables of different resistances and juices). Speaking very generally, 3.7v is like Mama Bear's porridge---a bit too cool. 5.0v is like Papa Bear's porridge---a bit too hot. But oh, that 4.5. That's Baby Bear's porridge---just right. That's why I'm such a VV fan now. I have a couple of 5V regulated boxes (I especially like the Big Kazoo), and it's great to be able to run 5V in my Phidias bottom feeders, but I'm getting pretty hardcore about VVs to fine-tune the band between 4 and 5 volts.

And with Madvapes new 3AA VV box, you don't have to be a millionaire to own one (or a hobbyist with great soldering skills, for that matter). I snagged one and am looking forward to adding it to what is rapidly becoming my little gaggle of relatively less-expensive VVs (Big Daddy, Big Brother, Big Splash). What a hobby! Cheaper than collecting cars (which I never did...) and takes up less space than collecting guitars (which I did for a long time...).

Though I'll be really happy to be able to get 5.0v batts from madvapes whenever they come in, I'm (at the moment) far more interested in knowing if they'll be button top or flat top. If they're flat, I have to mod one of my rough stack switches. If they're button top, both my switches will work.

So, are they button top or flat?

I'm curious about something with these. Would a 5V battery work with the variable volt regulator that Madvapes sells? Obviously output would be limited to below 5V, but being able to use one battery and still hit the 4.2-4.5V range could be useful. Or would this be below the threshold for that regulator?
