What is the function of the plastic-like material inside of the atomizer? is it necessary? i've removed it from one of my atomizer's with a toothpick(it was warped and relatively melted... Should i remove this from the start? The atty still works without that plastic.

No, don't remove it. It is part of the wicking process into the atomizer and I'm suprised the atomizer is still working.
