I have been using my 510's for several months now and never had this issue until about a week ago...

Here's the issue: My 510 is laying on the desk, (not in use) for a few minutes, then when I go to pick it up, it's blazing hot!

This started happening to my wife about a week ago. Since I wasn't there when it happened, I couldn't really give a logical reason what might have caused it. For all I knew she was pushing the button inadvertently or something.
I use my Chuck exclusively now, so I never got around to trying to narrow down if it was one battery in particular or not. She's got about a dozen 510's in rotation (each dedicated to its own flavor), so I couldn't tell if it was just one battery that was doing it or what.

Today, for some reason I was hitting one of my stock 510 units that hasn't been used in weeks. I set it down; the light was off. A few minutes later I noticed the light was doing the 'dead batt blink'. When I went to pick it up, it was scorching hot. The button didn't appear to be stuck down or anything, and the light wasn't on until it started blinking.

Now, since this was one of my batts, I know it's not just a single bad battery. In fact I have been using this batt for months with no problems.

So my questions are..
Has anyone else experienced this?
What is causing this?

I've got an SLB 510 batt that's doing this exact same thing! I've been using it for a couple of weeks and just yesterday it started going wonkie. Both the batt and the atty get really hot. It's like the switch is stuck, but really doesn't seem to be cause it will still push in. I'm clueless  Just glad it hasn't ruined the atty... (yet?)

Yeah, it heats the batt and the atty. I'm guessing the batt is getting hot because of the over discharge that's happening.
Just like CJsKee, The switch still has a clicking operation, like it's operating normally.
It doesn't kill the atty, but it does kinda ruin it, because it tastes like crap after the 'meltdown' happens.

I think its a stuck switch also, one of my 510 batts out of 3 just started doing this today, did it 3 times now. Each time i had to re-press the button a few times to get the current to stop.
Note that when this happens the LED doesn't light up, only way i even noticed was a sudden surge in heat as i held it. Its most likely a flodded switch I suppose, i just hope it repairable or drainable before it gets damaged.

I had this happen on my first 510 back in feb. my thinking at the time was its the batt. however when i put another batt on it same thing ,instant on,instant hot!!! batts ruined and will not recharge. never found out why just chucked atts& batts away.I personaly would not trust using that atty on your chuck anymore if not using protected batts.
