Thought this was cool to see, forgot I had the digital microscope, stuck one of my dead coils under it.
Vivi nova 2.4 coil I think

So I dry burned it till the black stuff turned grey, brushed it off (lightly) with a toothbrush then stuck it in the ultrasonic cleaner with vodka for 2 hours this morning. Here is the result

Still looks a little burned, think this will still taste nasty in the vivi?

I have recently tried this and it works well.
Water rinse
Dry...Dry Burn
PGA bath for about an hour
Stand the unit up in the PGA (I use a small shotglass)
Use a syringe to suck up the PGA in the glass and power flush the coil and wick area
Dry...dry burn once more and it should be like new

Did the method you did clean off all the extra "crud" that is in the after picture?
I'm worried even with the little bit left that its going to give that nasty taste again.
I'm still a newbie (bout a month old) what is PGA?

thanks,
Larry

you guys go through some crazy cleaning rituals....

In my 3 years of vaping I never do anything more than squirt a lil alcohol on the wick and coil, shake or blow it out and then re-juice. Under a minute and I'm good to go.

In this day in age, you could have wrapped a new coil and wick and installed in in a tenth of the time to do all that cleaning and it would be 100% good as new....actually new;)

I'm not knockin cleaning or dry burning at all just sayin, it's so cheap and relatively easy just to throw on a new coil once it gets too gunked up....why wouldn't you?

You have to realize some peoples taste buds are incredibly sensitive. Like myself.... I can not use cartomizers, they taste disgusting to me.
I have been looking into rewicking coils but I haven't found a place yet that I can order both the coil and wicking from, my mail sucks so the more I can have both in 1 package the better. Plus I can't find anywhere that sells like 5 feet of coil instead of 75 feet. 75 feet of coil would end up sitting in my toolbox out the garage lol.

Oh trust me, I understand the sensitive taste bud thing...I can't stand cartomizers either. Now that I have moved into rebuildables I've become even more sensitive to taste (basically realizing how bad regular atomizer and cartos taste compared) :)

Just seems to me the easiest way to maintain that fresh like new taste is to put on a fresh new coil, instead of trying to save a burnt taste coil and wick.

DIY Rebuildable Atomizer Parts : Stormys Vapor Cellar, Electronic Cigarettes & More
coil wire in 10ft increments and they have wick also

PnJ Resources, LLC : Nichrome 80
they don't have wick but the price on 100ft of wire is awesome. That's like 400 coils! you could have a fresh coil every week for a lil over 7.5 years for $8.50

Have fun, see you on the other side......:vapor:

True that it would cost almost nothing to rebuild per atomizer. The reason I was trying to deep clean is because I was going through heads in 4 days (my gf is still on her first since the 10th of this month). Since I haven't ordered the rewicking equipt yet I figured I'd try to prolong the heads as long as I could.
Will write back later, on my way to NJ

I think they are good as brand new. But then I don't have a 60X magnifier to look at them through.

I also do this on most new heads I use. Got started after playing with a brand new vivi nova head and it smoked and stunk just from the initial dry burn never being used.

lol well then you should get one :) jk
But honestly I do use a magnifying head loupe (like 12 bucks online) for lots of stuff around the house and can see into the coil pretty well with it.
I did notice today (got a shipment of 2.4 heads) that one of them had a odd taste. So i put a drop of water on the coil and heated it till all the water burned off and then it was fine.
