Hi, I'm 62 years old and was a heavy smoker. May 10th I quit smoking with the e-cig. I quit with Blu and am still using Blu. But it's so expensive! I was a heavy smoker and now I'm a heavy vaper. I spend over $250 per month for tanks and I really can't afford that. I'd like to be able to quit vaping. Would snus be a cheaper way to go. I'm never going back to tobacco cigarettes, I already have COPD.

howdy - and welcome!

there are significantly less expensive alternatives to spending $250/ month on vaping... with a setup like an istick and a nautilus tank ($75) then you are simply looking at coils and juice costs (1 coil per week, as an example, vaping 5ml/ day (which is likely an excessive number for that setup) - rough ballpark of $30/week maybe?) - so, first month $195, recurring monthly costs of $120... and keep in mind, I am just spitballing numbers here, likely a bit less...

personally, would not recommend the snus as a viable alternative

My friend I am 61 myself. I quit 3 years ago via e-cigarettes. With e-cigarettes the serious part is finding right liquid for yourself. It seems that you know it and the nic rate all is settled. which is the most important phase if you ask me.
On the other hand you can get an evod set (2 batteries, 2 tanks) This will allow you to have spares and after that when you dont spend more money than you get a mod 2 batteries a decent charger and a subtank mini or Taifun GT II (My favorites)
Dont look anything else you are in the right path.

I am always so proud of people who say they quit with a Blu or something similar. If you can do that, you can do ANYTHING!!!

Just goes to show though, it can be done.

you can get a starter kit + clearomizer, and then buy your own ejuice instead of using pre filled cartridges. Maybe something like
Innokin iTaste VV V3.0 Starter Kit (tube shape)
Eleaf Istick 30W w/Aspire Nautilus (box shape)
KANGER EVOD 2 BDC STARTER KIT (tube shape)
Aspire Premium Starter Kit (tube shape)

Innokin iTaste CLK Starter Kit

I started with the Blu myself and like them, but like you thought it was getting expensive though still less than buying cigarettes. I then went to the ego vape pen kits, got one for 20.00 with some eliquid and absolutely loved it. Have moved up a little with one mod and a couple VV pens but always keep my egos and clearomizers in stock. I personally don't sub-ohm so I am rather happy where I'm at. I would say I am spending about 40.00 a month after the initial equipment gear and backup coils (which I do clean to get more use of them). Once you find what works for you, you'll be happy not to be spending money on those overpriced tanks Blu sells.

Congratulations:thumbs:, and without a doubt, you don't have spend that much to vape.

There is good advice in the previous posts, most certainly look in to those recommendations, as they will all give a more satisfying vape than Blu, at a much reduced long term cost.:) also there is a ton of great info on here ECF, giving you more advice on many other options, just pick a thread and read, read, read. :)

(I also started with blu. :))

Well done on quitting. FWIW, I rebuild my coils and DIY my own juice. You have to spend a few bucks to get set up-- less than your monthly Blu cost would buy an iStick, a decent tank, some wire and wick, and some juice ingredients-- but I make coils for a nickel and have my juice cost down under 5 cents a ml. I personally don't save much money because I am a gear collector, but if I didn't have shinyitis I could vape subohm and blow cloud all day under 5 bucks a week.

Hey Reeta congrats on quitting! Mind if I ask where you are from? It will help me recommend where to shop to save you some cash :)

I have a refillable tank, I make my own coils, I make my own juice and I haven't had to spend a cent on vaping in the last 3 months, not that I haven't lol.

Boy, you're hitting those carts hard, but I understand if you smoked as heavy as I. I was a 43 tear 2-3 PAD smoker back in '09. I got a Blu as my first e cig due to nagging of my SO, spent a couple $100. That lasted a week until I got a couple manual batteries and learned to refill the carts myself. I went 6 months vaping constantly (sounds like you) and smoking just 6 cigs a day. At that point I got tired of the maintenance required and my cig count started edging up. That's when I started looking around.

There wasn't any of the fancy stuff that is around today, but bigger battery APVs and higher nic liquid was my next move, plus I started asking about this stuff snus. With the help from some of the members here, I headed across the tracks to the dark side-

What's under your lip/in your nose right now? - Part 2

I still had the stigma of believing smokeless was worse than smoking which I quickly was able to correct via google searches, especially in terms of Swedish snus. Back then, you couldn't find the stuff anywhere so in that seventh month I placed my first order. From the time I used my first portion, I knew I found my answer. I loved the stuff plus I no longer had that desire for a cigarette. On Feb 15th, I'll be without a single drag on a real one. Today, I still enjoy vaping but usually only if I'm out at a tavern and then only a puff here and there. To give you an example, I haven't taken a puff ince around 2PM on Christmas eve. I may do a ml every two or three days.

For the longest time, I only did 4-5 portions of snus a day. A Swedish snus can normally has 24 portions so I was going through less than two cans a week. I'm a little less thrifty today, probably 6-7 portions but I don't really track myself as closely. I could go on and on, but the important part is whether you like the stuff. I loved it and love the simplicity. You can use it anywhere, people don't even know you're using it. I basically discovered I had some depression in my physiology which led me to smoking in the first place (MAOI effect), snus hits that even better.

Anyway, if you'd like more info, head on over to the link and introduce yourself and feel free to ask questions.

@Reeta - I'm 63 and smoked 1 - 1 1/2 packs a day for 42 years. I quit by slowly tapering off of the ciggies while starting to vape more in place of those I didn't smoke. I began with a JoyeTech 510 Starter Kit, which is slim like a cigarette, which is what I wanted to stick with at first. The kit contained 2 batteries, 2 short about 1" long atomizers (little burners), and a box of 5 little cartridges filled with a foam material that you refill with liquid. I got the USB charger and a wall charger and I was set! I used only that kit and some e-liquid, and had my last cigarette 2 1/2 months after I started vaping. I used only that kit, too, for the next 3 months. Then, because I wanted batteries that would last longer...I also got some eGo-T batteries and some little tanks that I could refill with more e-liquid, so I wouldn't have to refill anything so often. I still used the kit though, too.

Back then, in Nov. 2013 when I first started vaping, I paid $49.99 for the JoyeTech kit. They're still available at several websites for about $20 now, because about the only people who still use them are women...wanting something close to their old cigarettes in size and feel. The little atomizers last a long time (mine are still working all this time later) and can still be bought easily online for about $2.00 each on sale. As for the refillable foam-filled cartridges, I got a bunch of boxes of 5, for female friends and other women I'm helping to change over to vaping. They were Clearance priced at $.50/box of 5!!

Since then I've also added a couple box mods, only because I can go even longer without having to recharge them. My little JoyeTech kit and eGo-T batteries and other tanks still work and I also still use them at different times and places. I buy my e-liquid for $39.99 for 150mL, and that lasts me about 3 months (depending upon how many samples of it that I give away).

So my point is this - Switching to vaping does not have to cost you an arm and a leg. There are inexpensive starter kits (many more than just the one I mentioned), inexpensive tanks/clearomizers ($5.00 or less) in a huge variety of types & sizes, places to get replacement coils for the tanks I use at about $1.50-$2.00 each, and inexpensive yet quality e-liquid. My average cost to vape now, for replacement coils (about 1 per week) & my e-liquid runs me about $25/month at the most.

I'll gladly let you know some places I buy the things I use, if you're interested. I'm known for being a bargain-hunter and finding super deals, especially on vaping things for people wanting to get off the smokes and switch to vaping only.

    Somewhere between here and there
Reeta, I started in 2009 with ecigs. I was one of the unlucky ones that still needed something more to curb the cravings. I, like Roth, found my way to the smokeless section. Swedish snus gave me what I was missing. I still vape regularly and use snus. I know you said you have quit smoking already so I guess you should think about whether you want to try snus or find a cheaper way to vape. If you get some good equipment, make your own coils, and DIY your liquid you can save a lot and also tailor your flavors to exactly what you like. If you want to find out more about snus then come over to the smokeless section Roth pointed you to. We are a friendly bunch and would be happy to try to answer any questions you have.

I am 61 and quit a 40 year habit of 1-2 packs a day with KR808 cigalikes with refillable cartomizers.
Was fully quit on cigs within a week.
Moved up to ego batteries and Evod tanks within a month or so. I now make my own juice and monthly costs are far under the cost of one carton of smokes.
If you like the cigalikes get some small clearomizers that will fit on your batteries. I think the Blu are 510 threaded and these will fit.
    Kanger E-Smart 510 Clearomizer
They are disposable but should last about a week or so and easially refilled with the ejuice of your choosing.
You can also get refillable 510 cartomizers.
    Boge 5pc LR 510 Cartomizer
Watch some vids on youtube about refilling cartomizers and the esmart clearomizers.

Cheapest thing I could find in your area that will be much better than what you are using is.

I'd recommend going into the shop try some flavors and ask if they can teach you how to fill and charge it, you will probably need some extra coils as well.

Juice will definitely be cheaper online, but you should get something to start with, perhaps someone from the US can recommend?
