Hey guys! I'm so sorry if this isn't the correct thread, I'm horrible at picking which thread is correct!
Anyway, I have a few questions that I need answers to since I'm new to vaping.

1. What is the difference between a top and a bottom-feeding tank?
2. What is the difference between an eGo battery and a mod?
3. What is the difference between a clearomizer and a cartomizer?

I don't want to be *that* person, but I need the answers to be very clear and understandable. Thank you all very much in advance!

Well I've been vaping for years and I can only answer one of your questions, which should tell you something.

Ego batteries are generally small, low powered, and tube shaped. Ego is also the name of a particular type of connection on the top of the battery where the tank attaches. The more common type of connector is called 510. Though I think most Ego batteries have both types. Almost all tanks today use the 510 connection.

The word mod is just another name for a vaping battery, including an Ego.

Keep on asking questions. It's the only way to learn.

1. A top-filling tank is filled by opening the top of the tank and adding liquid without having to unscrew the tank from the device. A bottom filling tank is filled by removing the tank from the device, unscrewing the base or removing the port screw and adding juice from the bottom. A bottom feeding atomizer is a special kind of DIY device that has juice fed through a tube connected to a tank inside the mod. It's also called a "squonker." Not recommended for noobs.
2. eGo batteries are pen-sized devices. A mod can be pretty much anything with a battery, a switch and a connector for the atomizer. People "mod"ify boxes, tubes, toys, balls... Most of the battery and power devices you see for sale in shops and online are referred to as mods.
3. Clearomizer is a clear tank with an atomizer inside. A cartomizer is a juice cartridge that only old farts and dedicated hardcore vapers use anymore. They are rarely seen in the wild and are occasionally spotted in museums. /snark

When it comes to tanks, It's where the liquid is pulled into the coil from. It really isn't important and most tanks are bottom feeding these days. When it comes to a dripper - which don't have tanks, it's more important based on the mod being used. Bottom feeding mods are usually boxy and are called squonkers. The liquid is carried in the mod and you squeeze the bottle and juice is feed up through the bottom of the RDA. If you don't have a squonker, you usually drip you juice into the mouth piece.

An ego battery is a self contained battery, usually associated with thin cigarette like devices. They generally use older style clearomizers. They were good to start with but much better equipment has come along in the past 4 years. A mod the device that holds the battery. Usually, the battery is able to be swapped out and recharged while another one is put in. You need a RTA/RDA to go with it or you just have a battery holder.

1. What is the difference between a clearomizer and a cartomizer?

A clearomizer is a premade small tank and coil combo. You can usually replace or rebuild the coil. A Cartomizer is a tank with a replaceable cartridge atomizer. They were great in the old days but today, they are considered messy, out of date and hard to find.

I am assuming you are new to vaping. Are you looking for a device? Lots of shops and online stores sell packages complete with everything you need. All you need to do is put in the juice and replace the coils every now and again. It's a good way to start while you are learning.

There are still a few top feed devices but they’re RDTAs not RTAs, which is what people normally think of when one says “tank”. The pharoh25 is one such. The avacado is another. Top feeders can have very long wicks that reach to the bottom of the tank. Modern RDTAs have much shorter wider wicks than the old fashioned ce4s though which had very slender silica wick many times longer than they were wide.
Top feed RDTAs are slightly easier to wick than RTAs because the length of the wick is not nearly as critical. They tend to have smaller capacities though.

eGo/eGo Style – A style of fixed output e-cig battery in self contained unit with better performance than a cig-alike, but with some of the benefits of a larger device. Usually uses a fixed output of about 3.3 volts, or variable up to 4.2 volts. Comes in different sizes and capacities from 600 mAh to 1600 mAh utilising a non-replaceable internal Li battery. Sometimes uses a propriety threading 'ego-style' connector rather than a 510.

Joye eGo-T was a device originally marked by Joytech in 2011, that later became synonymous with a particular style of device the same way that Hoover became synonymous with vacuum cleaners.

I advanced onto an eGo style system from cigalikes in 2012 and I can clearly remember (at the time) them being brilliant, at least compared to a cigalike. I quickly got frustrated with the lack of power, runtime, and the non cost-effectiveness of a disposable self-contained system.


The term mod originates historically from vapers modifying flashlights or other battery boxes to power atomizers. It has now become associated with any device used to power an atomizer, other than a cigalike.

It should go without saying, but since we are dealing with basics and in the interest of completeness......

After "removing the tank from the device", be sure to turn the tank over (base to the top) before "unscrewing the base!" Then "add juice from the bottom" which has now become the "top." And be careful that the glass DOES NOT stick to and come off with the base!

Now don't be laughing at the old guy! Been there, done that!
