Wow....so much to learn about this wonderful thing called vaping. My question(s) pertain to the nicotine in e-juice. Instead of relying on what appears to be the paranoia coming from the anti-vape crowds, as well as the so-called "experts", I would much rather read the testimonials from those who I consider to be the true experts-all of you that vape and handle the stuff on a regular basis.

I know that pure nicotine is lethal. I've read about the procedures for handling it when mixing your own, so much so that I don't think I will ever go down that road. Premixed bottles will be fine for me.

The first time I opened my CE5 to refill it, I was terrified of getting any of the juice on my fingers. Even though the very helpful lady at the store had assured me there was no danger, I was still (and still are/am) too green at the experience to really know.

Then there is the question of leakage, which I know most units do sometimes. The lady said, "oh, you'll just get some slight burning on your lips and tongue. Nothing serious". Really?

On the one hand, the anti-crowds are saying how dangerous it is to get the juice anywhere on your skin, as it is absorbed so quickly.

On the other, I see the people who sell this stuff acting as if it's no big deal.

I use 50/50 juice at 6 mg of nicotine, and my wife uses 12 mg. So my question and or questions is/are, how much danger is there is getting e-juice on your skin? How much if it gets on your lips, tongue, or in your mouth? What if you swallow a tiny bit? Can I just not worry about it, or do I need to be using hazmat gloves for the refilling and cleaning process?

Hi there Ricky,

LOL. i'd be dead 10 times over if any of those are lethal. all my stuff is either 24mg or 18mg.
I just make sure not to overfill and leak everywhere cuz i don't want to waste the juice!

The Great Nicotine Myth

I read this article... although i can't verify it, i believe you can get some ideas on this and do more research,
and find for yourself, that maybe.. you can't find much more.. .cuz there isn't too much research done!

Pretty sure, 24mg ain't hurting me none and even more sure, your 12's and 6's aint hurting you none (or scientifically speaking,
less than me)

Happy Vaping and Be Healthy!

Hey ricky,
Welcome to the ECF neighborhood.
6mg nic and the 12 mg nic are not really that strong,
as Zee pointed out, wash up if you spill.

Just remember to watch for pets and children, as they may react differently
than adult ex-smokers.

Been know to lick juice of my fingers.....hate to waste it......
Same buzz as piece of Nicorette......

There is no doubt that nicotine is a poison, and if ingested by a child or a pet can cause some serious harm. You, on the other hand, are an adult with a certain amount of immunity built up, and you are using very low dosages, so the risk is virtually nonexistent. There is no harm in getting a drop or two in your mouth. There is no harm in spilling some on your hands or exposed skin, but you should wash it off with soap and warm water quickly. Swallowing a drop of juice would be the same as taking 2-3 pulls off your ecig, The nicotine would just be absorbed through your digestive system rather than your respiratory system. No need for a hazmat suit.

With that said, I don't like the attitude of the lady at the store at all. Being so nonchalant about it is not good either. Like I said, nicotine is a poison, and it should be treated as such, even at low doses.

A nicotine overdose is easy to detect, as you will get dizzy first, followed by a feeling of nausea. It will take A LOT of nicotine to get any symptoms past that. It is important to understand the dangers of nicotine, but it is also important to keep those dangers in perspective.

Thank you for your responses, Everyone!

To be fair SBR, the lady at the store did acknowledge there was some risk, but she tried to calm my fears by assuring me that the risk of getting poisoned by such a weakened amount was low. Still, I cannot help but wonder what the effects would be if one were to accidentally spill an entire dropper bottle on their skin.

I had similar concerns at first, but if you're a tinkerer you *will* get juice on your skin. At first, I was religious about washing it off, or at least dabbing it off with a paper towel.

But you know how these things go. You start thinking "well, I'm nearly finished. I'll just do this last bit, then I'll clean up", and sooner or later you've been covered in the stuff for 45 minutes with no apparent ill-effects.

I think if there are any health hazards from vaping, it's the inhalation of food grade flavourings we should worry about. Getting them on your skin isn't an issue. Nicotine, you're not going to feel any worse than if you have far too many cigarettes (unless you're dealing with much stronger stuff). Bit of a headache, bit jittery, passes in an hour or so.

- edit: But yes, non-smokers, pets, children... Different matter. Don't know, and hope never to find out.

I filled my second brand-new Protank 2. I was tired, distracted and close to bed time but wanted a different before sleep flavor. I turned the thing over and dumped the entire tank of ~2.odd mils of juice on my hands. Yep I forgot to put a coil in.... I also got it on my house pants, so I promptly rubbed it into my skin with my juice soaked pant leg and made sure to check the carpet under my chair for any spills to protect cat and dog. I then cleaned my equipment best I could with oily hands before washing said oily hands. This was 30mg/l juice and I still needed a vape when I was all clean again.

I think the concerns are mostly for children and pets who have not built up a tolerance level OR for DIYers who are handling some pretty potent stuff while they are mixing.

When I first started vaping, I accidentally unscrewed an entire 8ml vivi nova tank onto my hand, because I forgot to turn my mod upside down to screw the tank off. 8ml at 36mg/ml, washed my hands and went on my way. Never had a problem with it. I have however, had some random ulcers in my mouth from flooded tanks, but my nic strength was so high, it's probably to be expected.

The amount of nic needed to overdose is high levels and from pre mixed bottles wouldn't worry about it, there's always a chance even just when vaping that you end up with a bit in mouth due to blockage or flooding, I'm use the 12ml same as you and smoke between 3-5ml a day dependant on how i feel or if I'm doing nothing since hand to mouth syndrome seems to be the major addiction still have from analogues, best bet is not to listen to non vapers as they generally have not looked into the aspects and read the scare monger tactics without using a logical approach.

I did similar to above poster unscrewed a MT3 and instead of coming off the Ego the bottom came off all over me didn't panic and just went and washed it off.

It's not so much the quantity of the nic juice but the strength. I've accidentally gotten 100 mg on my skin without issue BUT I cleaned it off immediately. As for juice in the mouth there's no tough outer layer of skin/ epidermal so of course it will burn. Look under the tongue- many visible veins...so many in fact there's a medicine delivery system known as sublingual meaning "under the tongue".
Now when it comes to kids and pets it's completely different. Kids or dogs visit us and I put everything away under lock and key.
I have juice mixed in a Lab and the Lab Tech is obligated to ensure everyone is protected to the point of overkill...just something he has to do as Nicotine is categorized as a poison and he must adhere to certain standards/ rules to retain his certification.

Nothing.. Someone here a couple of weeks ago was mixing their own juice and did in fact spill an entire bottle of nicotine on themselves.
They washes their hands and were fine.

I believe pure nicotine is 1000mg. You need a license or permit to be able to buy that. About the strongest that is used/can be bought for DIY is 100mg/ml and is mixed way down from there. Easy to get confused by it.

this is correct Flamingo ... 100mg (the strongest available) is 10% ... OP is using .06 and 1.2% ... nothing to worry about.

When I was first discovering different flavors and mixing them while constantly changing out the coils to find the best combinations I spilled oil everywhere....all the time. All over my hands, in my bed, on my shoes. Luckily I'm absolutely fine and it doesn't appear to stain anything. I didn't know there was any possibility of danger until this post.

Honestly, if I spill a drop on a finger or hand, I just lick it off--and that's at 24 mg/ml. Sooner or later, you're going to suck a drop or two of liquid up through a drip tip. I just spread it around on the roof of my mouth with my tongue. No need to rinse your mouth, etc. except to get the taste out if you don't like it. I treat 100 mg/ml with much more caution and respect.
