Phil, when I do mine I take the wrap off (Filler), this allows me to wash the inner blankets that cover the coils themselves and get all the burned up stuff off of them, I simply re-wrap it and put it back together and in the tube, it is a bit more work but it ensures all the bunt stuff is out completely. the inner blankets do get burnt and you wont see this unless you un-wrap it.

Good tip mwa102464! Should be easy enough to do! I was happy with the results without removing the wrap which is why I didn't dig any deeper into the carto. Maybe for a "nastier" carto I can try this.
