My humble opinions as follows:
I started with the cig-a-likes and quickly realized that I wanted something with more battery life, but was on a fairly strict budget. I bought 2 ego 650 batts ($12.50 each) with quick USB charger ($6.50) and stealth cones for a sleeker look on the threads ($1.75 each), 2 packs Boge 510 low resistance cartos ($7.00 per pack of 5) and a simple 510 drip tip (popping the rubber caps out to refill the cartos becomes a pain in the keester and requires a toothpick or paper clip, etc., drip tip pops right out by hand and was $3.75). I am a former pack-a-day smoker and a 650 batt will last me between 12 to 36 hours depending on my mood. Another important note: always have backups... And backups for your backups. If your equipment fails, then all hope is not lost and cigs are not your only recourse... disposables can be found in about any CVS / Walgreens / Wally World. They may not be great, but can get you through a period until your replacement gear arrives.
Liquid is mostly trial and error but I personally suggest not going crazy at first, since there are a lot of factors to take in (flavor, pg/vg ratios, nic level) and not all combinations / ratios / flavors that sound appealing will end up suiting your palette or personal needs. Sample packs are available from many vendors at a good price. Plain or straight menthol liquids are good to have handy in case you would like to thin a liquid or add a little coolness to your vape, and are also handy to have once the ugly "flavor block" rears its head.
Remember that smoking has done a lot of damage to your lungs, sense of smell and taste buds, so it may take a while of transition before you have your "wow" vaping experience. Don't give up- it will happen to you as it has happened to us all in this great community.
As always, ECF is a fantastic source of information and support, and all questions are considered worthy of support by the great members found within. I wish you well in your journey to vaping, and have nothing but faith that you will not be disappointed!

Wow! Did I hear someone recommend a Provari for a 1/4 Pack a day smoker?! What's your comission?

Chiups, I'd first ask:
1. What e-cig did you try, and what was your impression ?
2. Do any stores in your area cell e-cigs?
3. What's your normal smoking routine ?
4. Do you want something that resembles a cigarette in size or something that may be a bit larger.

If you're only smoking about 5 cigs a day there's no reason a pair of mini batteries wouldn't work well for you. I started out buying a (pretty crappy) e-cig at the gas station that I used to buy cigarettes at, I quickly moved up, but with compatible hardware, so if I ever need to buy something like cartos or a battery (dropped one in a wash bucket today) I know I can go around the corner in a pinch.

I'm fairly new to this, but quite committed, I went from 2 packs a day to vaping just over two weeks ago. My first mail-order purchase was a larger eGo style battery that was compatible with the 2 minis that I bought at the gas station. The larger battery is great because I can go all day (maybe 2) without worrying about it dying, but the minis have remained in use as well. They're quick and convenient and I don't think I'll ever not carry a mini around with me.

One of the big obstacles to quitting smoking is the high availability of cigarettes. For the most part most of us vapers are stuck ordering our supplies. For me I very quickly realized I had to stock up on supplies to make sure I didn't find myself unable to vape and walking into a store to buy smokes instead. At least now I know that if I really have to I can walk into the gas station in town and buy cartos or batteries if I ever find myself high and dry.

So I'd say start out by seeing what brands are sold around your normal area and give us an idea. Many of the popular e-cigs are compatible with the wide array of hardware you'll see on the many, many online stores in the vaping market.

That's just my $.02

I think they are more recommending it as a future thing as with smoker they change over to vaping and just quit the analogs, so rather then by the "alike" kits just go with something that will last and save you a ton in the end. I mean had I known what a provari was when I started vaping I would have saved myself quite a bit then again everyone has to learn on their own.

Hi Chiups,

My 2 cents is ego's are a good way to start. Now, I don't know your style at all but here are my beginning device recommendation. If you want something like a cigarette the the "Smoov" by House of Vapor is the way to go. If you don't mind something that does not look like a cigarette then I always recommend a KGO Kit from Hoosier E-cigs since its basic and easy to use and great for the elderly too. Add a mini vivi nova tank and a small ego tank sleeve just to make the vivi nova tank look good with the device but you don't need it just looks better to me.
Now if you don't mind making adjustments my last option I give is a Vision Spinner 1300 mAh battery which is a copy of the ego c twist but the adjust to change the voltage is easier for me to see which is why I recommend it.
Now, take your pick from your style and you will have a good start. Need juice suggestion just ask I am sure someone will be glad to help. I hope you find my 2 cents helpful.

This is pretty much what I think I will be going for, though I need to now research the Boge 510. I had originally had a Mini Vivi Nova in mind. How would you stack the two against each other? And thank you very much for the juice sites, that was gonna be my next line of questioning.

They are two different animals. For the Boge 510 cartomizer, it's cheap and easy, but you'll be filling a lot. The clearomizers like a nova are more complicated and finicky, you'll be spending more time cleaning and messing with it, but in the end you get a lot of liquid without filling and better taste. But they require more time and effort, it's nice to have cartomizers for when you just get fed up and want something simple that just works. Drip in the container and go, that's all there is to it. I find the polyfill in them does bother me sometimes, I can taste it and the idea of burning filler filling up my lungs worries me a bit. But they're great to have as a backup, or dedicated to certain flavors. I love the CE2 for flavor for a clearomizer, but it requires a lot of fiddle time.

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice! I think I've decided on going with an ego style for sure either the twist or the spinner, not sure yet. And I'll probably start with cartomizers until I find a flavor I like. Any suggestions on where to buy? So many different sites. Is it best to just compare prices?

If you go with a Twist, make sure they are the genuine eGo Twists. There are several sites that carry them. Two for sure are AltSmoke.com | Personal Vaporizers | Electronic Cigarette | Ecigs | AltSmoke.com | eGo-C Twist Battery and Genuine Joyetech eGo-C 1000mah TWIST Variable 3.2v-4.8v - BLACK [gv-egotwist-1000-BLACK] - $32.95 : GotVapes.com, E-cigarette Supplies - Atomizers Cartomizers Mods Juice and more

Got Vapes also carries the Genuine Vision Vivi Nova's. There are two sizes, the mini and the 3.5. Both are great to have. I have 5 of the bigger ones and 2 of the mini's. Love them both.

Just my opinion,,,but I think the larger Ego batteries are perfectly "portable". I take my 1300 everywhere, because I know it won't go dead on me for many, many hours,,,,,

I have a 650, 900, and 1300, and I love them all,,,,,,

they are the Volt X2's (similar to an ego, but offers an automatic battery, which means you don't have to push a button every time, you just suck on it to make it work),,,,,,

I suggest two different sizes, no matter what you get,,,,,,,,and an automatic and a manual so you can decide which you like better,,,,,,,IF what you decide to get offers that option,,,,,,

if an automatic is not offered, it's really no big deal to push a button,,,,I just like the autos better for driving, generally.

And congrats on taking the plunge :) I love my e-cigs :) I'd NEVER go back!!!!

Hello everyone, like most others in this section I am completely new to the world of personal vapes. Tried my first ecig yesterday and now I'm considering switching all together. But the amount of possibilities out there seem staggering! I joined the forum to find information to help guide me in the right direction. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi & welcome to ECF!!!!! :)

I'll give you the same recommendation I give everybody, because this is what worked for me...I'm a former 510 system user. (Well, I'm a former every vaping system available user.... :)

My vaping tastes have evolved radically over the past few years but I've found the "GO-GO" Starter Kit a good bet for the following reasons;

IF you're SICK of messin' with inconsistent Atomizers and all the of tasteless 510 & eGo vapors, then this system WILL please you.

* Cost - $59.95 for complete two eCig starter kit with (five) pre-filled Cartos or (three) pre-filled Go-Tanks: GO-GO KIT

* Batteries last up to two days between charges (depending upon how heavily you vape)

* Go-Carts - (Go-Carts hold 3ml of Nic Juice & Go-Tanks can hold up to 2 ml. (I vape all day on 2-3 ml) - The Carts are really no muss, no fuss but once you've acclimated to vaping you should really switch to the Go-Tanks (GO GO PREMIUM TANKS) as the vapor, flavor and throat hit are unparalleled. I really do insist that in time you do this :thumb:

Be sure to order the PRE-FILLED Go-Carts when you re-order. (Five pre-filled Cartos will come with your Kit but you'll need to specify the flavor and strength. I recommend 24 mg nic strength so you resist the urge to go back to analogs. I also recommend the flavor "EASY-BORO-USA Mix" as I personally believe this tastes most like regular Tobacco. I loved Menthol when I was smoker... hate it with vaping, so this natural Tobbacco flavor would most likely suit you. You can obtain that here: EASY LIQUID 10ML BOTTLES 24MG

Wishing you the best of Luck.... hope you find your Vaping Nirvana as I did :vapor:

*Update*

Thanks to everyone for the information, and awesome knowledgeable responses! I went ahead and picked up a few pieces over the Black Friday-Cyber Monday sale period. So far I'm very happy with my choice to switch to Ecigs. Ive even convinced one of my friends to switch as well, and will be getting him a starter kit as a wedding gift!

I picked up 2 Joye eGo-c Twist batteries (650, and 900 Mah), a Kanger T2 and a Vivi Nova. I also got a very nice juice sampler from Rawr vapor. So far I'm in love with their "straple" flavor.

Once again thank you for your help!
