Ya it's "protected" by blowing the mosfet chip. (time to toss the eGo in the trash bin)
If you care to look, there were probably over 100 threads here on ecf about that problem a couple of years or so ago. ("my eGo blinks three times and then nothing")

Perhaps that's the case on older or cheaper designs, but I've tested mine. The LED blinks 3 times, no heat, no drama and the ego continues to work afterwards.

Lack of education and stupidity have little to do with Function.
I have my Regulated Mods and use them quite often in rotation. I also have a small boat load of Mechanical Mods and use them as much or more.
I Know for a fact Safety comes from the USER as much as the Device.
I also know a Clearo can be as good as a Mechanical - Depends on the hands it is in.
Safety?
A Mech can be as safe as a Regulated with a simple 2 cent fuse and good IMR batteries.
The problems come from USERS
People that have no knowledge of FUNCTION. PEOPLE determined to prove physics can be challenged and changed.
Comments like Ego's Killed by shorting Clearo's............ well if users understood why they flashed 10 times and shut down, they might not have died.
Clearos do not magically short either. They either arrive miss-assembled and already in shorting condition or they get shifted around while cleaning.
Coil Sag? Who is kidding who? It takes a lot of heat to cause a coil to deform on its own. Heat well beyond anything a normal Vaper should experience.
Complaint: My Coil in my dripper shorted.
Solution: Don't bump the coil while refiling.
It is not the Devices that cause new users issues and become safety concerns.
It is the 1/2 quick comments and recommendations without explanation for understanding.
4Nine and KayFun are perfect examples - If Not for Strong Community backing and assistance a large percentage would be in the Trash and documented as garbage not to wast money on. WAIT!
Kayfun - Worst first wicking experience for most users of any decent device to date, complexities in proper filling.......etc.
4Nine - Battery Limited, complex assembly compared to the norm. Easily damaged and no OEM repair parts available.
Put these same 2 devices in skilled hands and nothing seems out of the norm.

Why would you even think about rebuilding an iclear 30 coil?? That's a NO NO! PEOPLE in you tube rebuild coils all the time but those coils don't last..it might work for a day or two but that's in... It doesn't make sense rebuilding coils,you might as well just drip!!!!
I always use whatever I build on my DNA30 device first once I know it's good to go I'll move it to my mech.

OK, now I feel old LOL ... I still have a couple of CE4s and Vivi Novas. I use them when I want a leak proof stealthier device to go out with and don't want to take a carto tank.
Never tried one on a mechanical mod. I doubt the small power/performance range would make me happy considering battery voltage drop.
I only know of one incident like that and the guy was using ICRs and stacking. I've never heard of any IMR or hybrid battery exploding in use. If you have any links I would love to check them out

The guy wasn't using ICR's as it turned out. He was stacking unprotected 123s that he bought at radio shack.
But, it still put PureSmoker.com out of business! So one of the really great US made mechanical mods gone forever because of one persons stupidity!

tj, are you saying that was the incident that got PureSmoker? I've always wondered about it and never heard this from anyone before. Not doubting you, just want to make sure I understand correctly.
Yes, the guy was using an original style PureSmoker Prodigy.

For the record, the I clear 30 was fully factory, with the coil it came with. It ohmed out at 2.46 on my resistance meter about 15 minutes before the incident. I check my atties every day, I am not some uneducated kid playing with fire. I am only using it because the tank on my kraken broke and I didn't feel like dripping. I ohmed it when I got home after the incident and it still read 2.46 ohm. Tested on another mod it hard shorted again. The batteries and Atty have been disposed of.
You did nothing wrong inanitydefined. I wouldn't have done more than check the clearo before using it either. Now that I've read about your experience I'm more aware of this and thanks for that
This can happen with pretty much any atty. I use rebuildables and that's why I do a last check on the mod before firing it when I can. Easy with drippers, never have figured out a way with cap-less attys like the Kayfuns.

When you guys say "hard short", you are saying basically the 510 connection shorted out against the mod topcap, right?
OP, did you not try and isolate the cause before you disposed of the atty, as far as what was wrong with the atty itself?
No no no..........Clearo Coil will not survive a hard short. Wire is to thin and will snap.
To Hard short/work right/hard short.............You have to be having a Bridging short. Center pin to body.
This could be in the atty, or the atty being tightened down and the Mod shorting.
Yes this has happened many times and will continue happening as one company builds mods and another builds toppers. Very few test A to work with all versions of B under (HUMAN) conditions.

Yes, that's what I meant. Or an internal short further up in the clearo not involving the coil. If the coil were involved it would not have taken the resistance all the way to zero, or really close to that. It should also have meted the coil quite quickly, eliminating the issue.
ETA: crxess, I should have read your post above before I posted this one. Would have saved me typing out mine
