If you get tired of messing around with a mesh wick try this, it works VERY well.

Get some some peaches and cream 100% cotton yarn from walmart.
Get your drill bit set or a micro screw driver set, stick them into the wick hole till you get one that *just* fits.
Wrap a coil, i use 32g for 5 wraps=2ohms.
Attach the coil with the bit or screw driver in it to the posts, make sure it stays vertical.
Cut a piece of yarn, boil if you feel the need, make it about 3 inches.
Remove one thread from the yarn.
Double up the yarn and wet the looped end
Twist the wetted end as tight as you can and twist it into the coil and down into the tank till it touches the bottom.
Cut off the excess yarn at the top about 1/4 inch above the coil.
Fill the tank and drip a couple drops onto the cotton in the coil.
Wait about 10 min for the juice to completely soak the cotton.
Put the cap back on, making sure the airhole is lined up with the coil.
Vape.

I've been using this in one of my AGA-T+ and its almost as good as my mesh.
I'm gonna try wrapping my, unoxidized, mesh wick in a couple layers of cheese cloth in a bit to see if that will get rid of the PITA that is the top coil.

BTW is anyone else finding the neg screw next to the wick hole is just slightly too big and touches the coil or seems to act like a heat sink?

The first time I set up my dud I used the 'bluegrasslovers' method and it worked great. I wanted to see if there was any difference, so I went to a straight ss build. I got it going with a minimum of trouble (I had watched several videos at that point lol) and it worked great, but before I got through a full tank, I noticed my juice wasn't tasting as good as it had been. I syringed the remaining juice back out and it was pretty dark looking. I was getting way too much run back to suit me.

I then rebuilt it with a couple layers of cheese cloth around the ss. I also shortened the ss a little and let the cheese cloth come down below the ss, hoping it would reduce the run back and I think it did. I also plugged the top hole of the wick with cotton and between those two things I can make it through a whole tank without my juice changing flavor too much. I'm just cleaning that set up today because of gunk build up.

Twisting the wire or just doubling the wire back completely cures that hot top leg. Twisting the wire gets used all the time to reduce the heat of the legs of the vvn builds but I never see it mentioned for ss. I use twisted wire for one leg on my reduxes, one leg on my drunker, and the top leg on my duds. Works like a charm. But really, on the duds, all that's needed is to go around the post and let the tail come back to the wick and touch the top leg there.

I think you'll like the cheese cloth covered ss. Two layers is all you need, and let us know how it goes.

Edit: I do recommend one juice burn to season the ss, else it takes a little time to break in.
