last night my husband burned a hole in the mattress..not a small cigarette hole, a baseball size hole! Thru the covers, sheets and into the mattress! I was 2 rooms away and smelled smoke! I checked the kitchen thinking he had left the oven on after making a snack. I looked in the bedroom and saw smoke rising! He was sound asleep.
I yelled and woke him up and poured his water on the smoke. Together we made sure the mattress was cold and wet before I could rest. I have heard of mattresses and couch's bursting into flames hours after the fire was out.
He has been half hearted trying to quit analogs but he is still at the half and half stage. he takes a bag full of meds everyday for heart problems and back pain. Then there's a whole drawer of more meds for the stomach pain the bag full of drugs give him!
He falls asleep anywhere anytime. He doesn't smoke in the bedroom normally due to the falling asleep thing. But for some reason last night he did.
Tonight he starts on Chantrix and I ordered 0nic marl liquid and some 0nic cartos from Steve. The Chantrix worked for him a few years ago but he was working then, it made him dizzy and that's not good when you have a long commute. But he is retired now and can sleep all he would like.
Wish us luck!

It has to be very scary to smell smoke and find your hubby's mattress on fire. He is so lucky you were home when it happened. My gosh, MK, you have had so many stressful things going on, you don't need any more.

Good luck getting hubby to switch and I hope it scared him enough to decide not to smoke in bed anymore.

Oh my goodness, Mary Kay! Good luck! I hope he can quit.

Thank goodness you were there to wake him up!

I can't tell you how many times I've left the house wondering if I'd left a cigarette burning in the ashtry or left one laying on the vanity or something. I've even gone back home to check!

I sure hope he has success this time.

Thanks guys, from your mouth to God's ear! He has smoked since he was 12..over 50 years! he does want to quit but for him it's a major effort. For me it was trading one habit for another..easy peasy.
What really upsets me is that this whole e-cig thing was for HIM!
Oh well I doubt this will wake him up..but it sure did it for me! I will not be as laid back as I was about him puffing away!

Talk about scared! My heart was racing.. But the scariest part was that his face was about 4 inches from the hole when I got to him..much longer he could have been injured from smoke inhalation..talk about irony!
We all worry about what's in our Analog smoke and P.V. vapor..but what about about what chemicals are in a burning mattress. The electric Blanket happened to be folded back..Thank Goodness!

Well MK, one of the reasons I quit smoking is because I did not want to burn the house down! My husband and I woke up one morning with a big hole in the pillow and mattress, right where my head lays, and he freaked out!Me too,it was scary to think I could of killed everybody in my home, thank God I didn't! So good luck to your hubby on quitting,it was a wakeup call for me:)

MK, you are amazing. I was so relieved that everything turned out okay while reading your post. Boyfriend used to smoke in bed too, lots of cig burn holes in the comforters, blankets and sheets from him falling asleep with a lit analog. Glad we stopped smoking inside before somthing bad happened.
I echo everyone else in hoping that this was a wake up call for your hubby - am hoping the combination of Chantrix and 0 nic VK will do the trick for him. Does he really need the Chantrix? Perhaps a higher nic cart would do the trick? I am sure you have tried everything & whatever you feel will work should work.
Best of luck in your endeavors! My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Doe's your husband snore loudly when he sleeps? If he does it may be he has sleep apnea which can be treated. I know I have it and would fall asleep in the middle of a conversation sometimes.

Mary Kay,

So sorry to hear about your little incident, it could have really been a tragedy had you not been awake. Tell hubby not to be so hard headed, if he gives up those killer sticks he could throw away about half of his meds.

I cant think of a thing i miss about smoking. Baking holes in things is one of those things. I never fell asleep and roasted a mattress, but certainly have nodded off with a cig in hand and it was certainly going to happen eventually. Nothing funny about matress fires. Most of those nutty stories you hear about "spontaneous human combustion" where nothing is left but a foot or hand were tied directly to falling asleep while smoking and the smoldering materials using body fat as fuel while providing it with a wick (the materials, such as cotton).

Good that you smelled the smoke, a lot of people didn't/don't. And your suggestion that you were "almost a widow" is a lot closer to the truth than some might realize.
