This is just a curiosity of mine, I am not advocating alternate power sources or claiming they work or anything else other than what I am about to ask.

The other day I started thinking about how nice it would have been if e-cigarettes were invented in the 70's. I'd like to think my father would have switched to them and possibly he would be still alive today.

Then, I started thinking that in the 70's battery life was dismal and rechargeable batteries where in their infancy. It probably wouldn'tt have worked and the reason they are available today is not just because they wereinvented a few years ago, but also because of a technological convergence (and political if you think of china embracing capitalism) thatmade the divice possible.

Then I started thinking how they could have worked with 70's technology and I remember that at the time I had some sort of propane or butane mini lighter that probably could have been rigged with something else to produce the same effect.

Would that have worked? Has anyone tried to make an e-cigarette with a real flame or with a gas powered heating element?

I want to go full blown atomic power. Maybe a small nuclear power plant powering the atomizer. Tiny little cooling towers jutting proudly as I vape. A fraction of an ounce of uranium could produce a lifetime's worth of vapor.
Should that prove to be too great a task, perhaps a thermal system. I generate enough hot air around here to power several e-cigs.

I had to google that.
Yes, like that. Expensive though, not so much the device, but you have to basically buy everything from them.
Has anyone tried it?

I have... Don't waste your time! Good idea... lousy performance. It didn't take very long before I threw it in the trash.

Here is another oddball idea: what about one of those crank that generates power for radios and flashlights? Hook it up to a pass through and vape away (with sore hands)

There was at least one of those actually completely and discussed in the modders forum. If you search "hand crank" on the forums a bunch of threads pop up suggesting some options. The ultra-capacitor options seems the most liekly but also seems too big for more people's liking.

I'd like to see a solar powered battery. Fat chance of that! Even if it were possible, it'd be expensive. The battery makers would freak over it.

Same problem as the ultra-capacitor design. Too big. However, I already use a roll-up solar mat to charge my 18650s.

I think we're not far from seeing a mod with the cells wrapped around it being able to function somewhat. -Magnus

Sure there's alternatives to batteries like I keep telling my wife, it's called Sex.. er.. oh wait we are talking e-cigs here

I think the hand crank idea is interesting for low tech ideas but I don't think you could get the amperage out of it that you really need.. who knows.. the Ploom I'd love to try but not at those prices.

Oxygen is combustible. We need a mechanical device that would take the air around it, combust it and wham-o.

Ultrasound was the original idea by the chinese guy that done it, which was invented in the late 50's. Theoretically its only been the idea to do it that's been lacking for nearly 60yrs.
Before that we could have used any one of thousands of possible implementations, just takes a clever person to make it small enough and marketable.
