Yes you can count on it that they will eventually break down. Eventually they will need to be replaced. I do think you can get as much life out of them as possible and then make up your mind where to go from there. No reason to move on when what you have is working for you. Just keep in mind that there are other options.
I was also a RYO guy. I actually started vaping because I was ticked off at the tax increase on my loose tobacco. I am actually super cheep about my vaping compared with most. I make my own juice, and mods. Although I have spent money on stuff it's never been as much as I did even on RYO. It just seems like it at first. Believe it or not it can be cheaper to go with a mod over the long haul. You don't have to go nuts to upgrade your kit. When the time comes that it it's breaking down and needs to be replaced look at all your options.
I just bought the first thing including juice in over a year. I bought a lave tube for $27 bucks delivered. That was splurging for me.

If you stick with it long enough, you'll become a "vaper at heart" and you'll want whatever gives you the best vape. And then those little cigarette look-a-likes won't cut it anymore. Most of us were just like you in the beginning.
My first PV was a Joye 510, and it got me off cigarettes. It wasn't long though, before I tired of the frequent battery charging. I moved into APVs, but still keep my Joye 510 around for sentimental reasons...it also would come in handy as an emergency-all-else-has-failed back-up.
Personally i started with the gas station or convience story stuff. I used it as a substitute but found myself smoking and then taping right after. I went another year on analog then my brother introduced my wife and I to the Ego-t system. So far, aside from a smoke here or there, i haven't had more than 10 analog in the last 2 months. Its all in how you make it. I personally like the "tank" type because i don't have patience for Carto filling..... I've tried box mods, they're cool. I've found that the Ego twist satisfies my every need so far. Good luck to you HOPS, and welcome to the dark side.

Hops, I agree with the first reply to this thread; the important thing is what works for you. I've found taste is highly subjective. I have a friend that I don't like what he is vaping, and vise versa. To me some flavors taste nothing like the name or the description, don't order a big bottle until you try it. I too quickly moved away from those little e-cigs. I use Ego batteries with a tank for an all day vape. I was a heavy smoker now I'm a heavy vaper. The important part is I'm no longer inhaling smoke.
I introduced a co-worker to vaping with a 510. She has never changed models, won't try dripping, different tips, tanks, nothing. Likes her little 510 and it works for her (over 2 years for her).
My progression was from a cig style all the way to recently getting a Provari. I continued with Ego types for out n about cause I like them. I am down to 2 Ego batts and won't replace them simply because it costs more to keep buying those types than the mod batts.

Agreed. Do what it takes to stay away from cigs....but it may be a big tube in your hands soon.
I now laugh at the days a couple months ago I thought a cigalike was heavy as I puff on a provari with a pyrex tank.
I guess there are many who started with the cig-like devices and stayed with them, happily. But if you hang out with us long enough, you'll start to change too. If you're happy with what you are using now... leave, run, far away LOL.

I like so many others started the exact same way.. And now I don't even want to think about using anything that doesn't have stainless steel mesh inside and no filler, etc...
The quitting cigs part of vaping was left behind for me a long time ago, now its about enjoying vaping, and getting the best possible flavor..

I am one that uses the eGo-c with a clearo. Since I am probably one of the few in this forum that really has no backups, (I guess you could count my 21st Century's as a backup) the one day I came home from work without my eGo, and I charged up one of my "cig look a like" 21st Century e-cig, and dropped some juice on one of the old carts I had for it. Actually, it wasn't that bad of a vape, and I used it most of the night, and it worked pretty well. Of course, I was still missing my eGo though.
this thread was fun to read: haha but anyways, i started out on the SI volt cigstyle kit about a year ago and it only lasted for about s month and wasnt cutting it. so i went back to analogs. but 3 months ago i got back into it and had seen online how much it progressed. variable voltage, tanks, RBAs, etc. it itrigued me so much. i ended up getting my first ego from SI actually, the X2. i was SO stoked. haha. long story short, i progressed fast. first VV was a vector lava tube from vaporbeast, then a few joyetech twists were next. i didnt like how large the lavatube was, taking it to work was a hassle. i now have a black provari mini and its straight up just amazing. foreal. i always used cartomizers from the beginning. messed with tanks a little bit but wasnt my thing in the end. the day i started dripping ruined me. i now am spoiled with amazing flavor from IKV 901, iO6, and the hh357 from avid. once you use top notch products, there is no going back. the end

Well it's been 5 months vaping for me and today was the first time I took the X2 to work as a bit of a celebration. One of the guys renovating downstairs was so intrigued that we had a talk about what he would need to get to quit cigs.
I still use my 78 mm Volts everyday. They suit work just fine, and are great when I have to go out places during the week and I want to be discreet on some-one else's turf. Lately I've been vaping with CE3s or XL cartos on them. I don't think I'll ever toss them aside. I was a heavy smoker for a long time, and at home I can be a heavy vaper. Still love my Volts. I don't like calling them cig a likes as mine don't look like cigs. One of the smokers at work told me last week that she thinks they look quite stylish, especially with the drip tip.
So Hops - no, you're not alone. I love my X2, and at either the 6 month or 1 year mark I think I'll celebrate with a mod. But those cool slim 78s will always be close at hand.

You've certainly discovered vaping, but you still see yourself as a smoker. Given enough time, the smoker mentality will fall away and you may be very surprised to find yourself with a completely new perspective.

There are actually a few people who started with mods. My other half for instance :0). Course I had been vapeing for a year when he dove in. He has since absconded with one of my Hogs, a silver Buzz and a lava tube I picked up off the classy's.
I think MOST of us started with the cig alikes. I used them for about two weeks! Found out they would be WAY more expensive than smoking, pre-filled carto's and such, and dove into eGo's.
I laugh when people talk about money compared. I guess I see the world a bit differently. I see a longer view. Painting the house because of analog nicotine and junk on the walls, car not worth as much because of analog's, clothes that wear out quicker, possible job loss as so many places are going "tobacco free" and god forbid, cancer. We bought two cars at the same time. Mine is worth more BECAUSE I never smoked in it, by thousands. No ash or burn stains. Doesn't SMELL like an ashtray etc.
So when folks laugh at how much I've spent........especially those whom are still smoking, I smile and think of the money I'm saving in all ASPECTS of my LIFE because of vapeing.
Are my mods as bit more expesnive to start with than analogs, yep they where, but now? Nope.
