Cartridges don't hold all that much really. Maybe 1/2 -3/4 mililiter. Cartomizers usually hold ~ 1 ml. Average use varies- a rough guess is about 3ml/day, depending on the individual vaper and the nicotine concentration. If you're not smoking, and you're not feeling dizzy or nauseous you're probably fine. You can refill the carts. Refilling cuts WAY down on the costs.

The average vaper will vape about 3ml of e-liquid a day. A 30ml bottle of e-liquid on average costs $14. If you are using pre-filled carts, they are much more expensive than filling blank carts with e-liquid you buy which is what 99% of us do. The most common nicotine strength used is 24mg. If you are using a lower level of nicotine, you may be vaping more because you are not getting enough nicotine. Vaping is less efficient in delivering nicotine so generally you need a higher concentration to equal what you are use to from smoking.

As long as you're not making yourself feel sick from a nicotine OD then you're probably fine.

^ This. I wouldn't worry too much. It takes time to figure out what will be your ideal nic strength, etc. As long as it keeps you off the cigarettes, vape away.

As for cost, if you turn out to love vaping, you might want to consider DIY juice mixing later. It's not as hard as it sounds (buy flavorless juice, add flavor) and I just bought a years worth of DIY supplies for under 100 bucks, and I vape 5ml daily.

You can DIY if you want to try it someday, but for now you should at LEAST look into refilling your own cartos. Most e-cig websites will claim that a cartomizer is equivalent to a pack of cigarettes... THEY LIE!.

I can go through about 3-4 cartos a day, but only 3mL of juice. 3ml is average usage, so I know I'm not out of hand. Besides, there are only so many hours in a day -- when I used to smoke I could always tell if I'd smoked too many in a row because I'd get hot flashes and feel wired up and nauseous, I figure that's probably how I'd feel if I over-vaped but I haven't felt that yet so.....

As for the cost: How much did you spend on cigarettes? Vaping should cost less than smoking if you refill your own cartos, if you decide to DIY you save even more, if you just buy and discard cartos you might break even but if you don't at least you aren't purchasing cancer sticks anymore.

Here's a little video showing a really easy way to refill your own cartos. Really, it's how you're going to save money and it's super-duper easy:

Hi KMAR75,
I was a 1 to 1 1/2 PAD smoker for 30+ years. Although I still smoke 4-6 analogs a day, my usual vaping intake is about 5ml per day of 24mg. As many others here, I refill cartomizers with e-juice purchased in 15-30ml bottles. .
Refilling carts is much cheaper than buying prefilled, plus you have a better variety of choices.
Refilling is easy. Here are the two most common ways of doing it.
Check out these vids:

or YouTube - Care And Feeding of Cartomizers Part 2

DIY e-juice is another great way to save money buy avoiding prefilled carts.
Here's a good vid to watch regarding DYI e-juice:

Good luck and keep avoiding those "stinkies".

What e-cig are you using? And by cartridge do you really mean cartridge aka cart, the push on mouth part of a 3-piece e-cig? Or do you mean cartomizer aka carto, the screw-on mouth part of a 2-piece e-cig?

Slick rebranders on the web totally lie about how long a cartomizer lasts. Rebranders often say a cartomizer (they may call it cart) lasts as long as 1 pack or even 1 1/2 packs of cigarettes. But that is just a lie for them to sell their stuff. The Chinese manufacturers lie too in their specs. They say things like you get 200-300 puffs per cart which is just ridiculously wrong unless the Chinese are figuring in refills.

That's why you want a model with carts or cartos you can refill easily with e-liquid. The screw-on cartomizers are meant to be disposable but if you don't burn them dry you can get some number of refills out of them until you either singe the stuffing, or the internal atty dies, or it just tastes bad. Rebrander 2-piece e-cigs often have harder to fill cartos with hard caps or glued on caps because they want you to buy lots from them, not refill them (it is still possible to refill them, just not the intended way if you can't get the mouth-end cap off without mangling it). For popular models like those recommended here, you can get soft-cap cartos that are more easily refilled. You might get 5-8 cigarette's worth or puffs out of cartomizer I think?

Re the carts - the push on carts of 2-piece e-cigs - many of those hold about 1/2 as much as a normal size carto. You might get 2-5 cigarettes worth of puffs out of one but then they can be topped off the e-liquid or totally refilled, the stuffing can be replaced when it gets cranky, etc.

If I might ask, how much do the carts cost? How much was the unit?

The reason I ask is that you mentioned that it was expensive and then you mentioned getting supplies from the smoke shop. My concern is that almost without exception, the things they sell at smoke shops are exorbitantly over-priced and generally don't work as well as some of the other kinds.

Often the smoke shops sell sub-par sets for upwards of $100 (often with only one battery) and spare carts for...well, too much money.

It should be saving you money or at minimum you should be breaking even.

For example, you can get a really good set up for $40 (2 batts, 2atty's, 5carts, a charger) and a 30ml bottle of juice to refill it with for about $15 (at 3ml per day that's 10 days worth) OR a 5 pack of cartomizers for less than $10.

I guess I should've said this was going to be pricey if I'm going to go through more than one cartridge a day. My unit cost $39.95 one battery, one atty, and 4 cartridges(pre-filled), with a usb charger.
The cost of the refill cartridges is $11.95 for 5. They tell you that these 5 cartridges should equal an entire carton of cigarettes. I guess where I'm concerned is this, if I'm going through a cartridge a day(which I've found out is not so bad), I'll be spending the same amount of money as if I were just smoking analogs. However, the point is not to save money, but break free from the stinky habit of smoking analogs. So all in all, I guess I was just concerned that I was getting ripped off because my cartridge wasn't lasting as long as I had initially expected.

ok, it doesn't sound too horrible (except you only have one battery, what do you do when it's charging?) or in any case it's workable. All you really need to do is get yourself some e-juice to fill your carts with when they get low, you can buy a 30ml bottle for not too much money and just drip a few drops of it into the fluffy filler stuff of your used up cart. That's how you're going to get the savings going.

But like you said, the real savings is in your improved health.

Good luck, and happy vaping! :)
