Hi, my name's Jeff and I like candlelight dinners, long walks on the beach......wait a sec. Wrong forum...

So, as evidenced by the title, I'm new here. I recently found myself lamenting the fact that Iowa winters are too cold to sit outside in the evening with my hookah, and I won't smoke it in my apartment. I have a few friends on Facebook that I remembered vape, so I started digging for information. This site showed up on a lot of my Google searches for information, so I decided to join. Mostly I've been picking a friend of mine's brain that lives in CA and works at a vapor lounge, but I'm sure he's getting sick of my incessant questions, so now I'm here to annoy you.

I guess I'm not really doing this to quit smoking, as I don't smoke anything but the hookah, and at worst during the summer, I go through maybe 6 or 7 bowls in a month. This is more something I can do when the hookah just isn't feasible. I usually have company when I smoke it, and I'm not interested in sitting around for an hour plus with nobody but the hookah for company while I force myself to smoke the whole bowl by myself and then regret it the next day. Mostly though, it's because it's too effing cold outside right now. The hookah can hibernate until spring time.

Right now, I'm setup with a nautilus Mini on an R2D2 vv/vw mod. Sitting in the mailbox at home, I have an Atlantis and Vanilla mechmod clone I'm itching to play with when I get home. I've also ordered some Kanthal and a couple cheap rebuildables to tinker around with and decide just how far down this rabbit hole I want to go.

So point me in the direction of some good stuff to read on the reasons we use a given number of wraps, vs twisted wires, flat wire, wick materials, etc... and anything else that will get me off to a good start. I'm one of those that when I start a new hobby, I try to learn absolutely everything I can about it. Like I said, I've gleaned a lot from my friend's head, but I know I haven't gotten it all yet.

Hello and welcome to the forum Jeff. Glad to have you here!:)

Before you start using a mechanical mod and a rebuildable you first need to educate yourself with regards to battery safety, Ohm's Law, amp draw, etc. I highly recommend you spend some time with Baditude (one of our resident battery experts) and visit his blogs. You will be 100% in control of your own safety (and others around you). Make sure you purchase an ohm reader and a voltmeter or DMM so you can measure your builds, check for shorts and measure the remaining charge on your batteries.

Baditudes Blogs. The blogs regarding mods and rebuildables are listed below:

BATTERIES

9. Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected ICR?
* Another essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.

17. Purple Efest Batteries Not As Advertised
* A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes a commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.

OHM'S LAW

14. Ohm's Law for Dummies (Vapers)
* My attempt at explaining Ohm's Law in layman terms and how it relates to vaping.

16. Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations
* As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept. Warning: Includes graphic photos of mod explosions.

MECHANICAL MODS & REBUILDABLES

7. Information Resources for Your First RBA
* An essential read and reference guide for someone new to rebuilding coils. Includes a multitude of useful links on battery safety, mod safety, coil meters, coil building, and the differences in the three types of RBA's.

15. Inexpensive Mechanical Mod and RDA Setup
* A response to the frequently asked question on how to get into rebuildable atomizers with a mechanical mod inexpensively. Includes a list of commonly used tools and supplies for rebuilding and where to find them.

BATTERIES - WHERE TO BUY

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics

I probably should have mentioned; Another hobby is electric RC aircraft and cars, so I'm actually pretty familiar with different battery chemistries, etc... and how to avoid pissing off a battery. :) The concepts don't change between the hobbies. Pull more than a battery is rated for and you're playing Russian Roulette. For work, I do IT stuff for a pretty well known battery company, so I have access through work to a couple different varieties of 18650 IMR cells, most notably the Sony VTC4s. We've also got some red IMR cells that are rated for 20A as well, but I'm not sure who makes them. I've got a pretty nice Fluke multimeter to test with when I start monkeying around with coils as well.
