Hi everyone. I am hoping I can find some advice on reliable pv brands for my first purchase.

I have never smoked analog cigarettes, so I don't have a nicotine addiction to deal with. I did like the taste of the vapor off a Smoov pv a friend of mine let me try, so I am looking for a pv set of my own for light use (or what i think is "light" compared to how much other vapers seem to use theirs). One question is which brands are most reliable. There are so many mixed reviews for so many brands it is hard to see any one brand that stands out above all the others.

After reading the posts here, a lot of people obviously like the eGo, but I don't have enough cash at the moment to get something portable AND a big battery mod, so for now, I want something small and easy to carry. Since I don't have any nicotine cravings to deal with, I can't see myself being a heavy vaper, so I think the smaller batteries will be fine for work. Plus, every eGo starter kit I have seen comes with carts that contain nicotine, which I don't want.

I also plan on getting a bigger battery for home use that lasts much longer, but I think the silver bullet would be my choice for that when I do get one.

For the small pv's I have been thinking of getting the standard length vapor king manuals. The starter kits come with a lot of gear, but most of the reviews I have found for V4L are from 2009 and some from 2010. Has the quality slipped or is it still a good brand? I have also been looking at the Volt starter kits over at Smokeless Image. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!

Check out the forum dedicated to vendors. Many of them offer starter kits for a reasonalble price and if they are registered here, you will get what you pay for. If you are not a smoker, look for a company that offers juices higher in VG, since PG will give you what is called a "throat hit" and probably not what you are looking for if you just want flavor.

Almost every kit I looked at when trying to decide what to get came with prefilled cartridges. You may just need to buy a set of empties and toss the filled ones. There is probably a post here somewhere about cleaning carts, so you might be able to just empty/wash the prefilled of nicotine containing juice.

Anyway, I just got (by just, I mean showed up in my mailbox about 4 hours ago) my first non-convenience store e-cig. I went with the most basic Joye 510 kit from cignot.com ($35 for 2 batts, 2 attys, ac charger, and 5 {filled} carts). Price is good, and it's a little longer than a regular 100mm analog cigarette.

Minus the charger, everything else will fit in an empty Altoids box, with enough room to spare for a small juice bottle.

For someone that doesn't smoke, you've spent more time researching pvs than a smoker trying to quit does. ODD.

You want a real suggestion? Spend your money on something else. We vape because we're addicts that can't quit smoking.
What I look for in a pv wouldn't apply to you because you don't smoke. You're not trying to recreate the smoking experience because you don't have one.

I really wish there was a section of the board for non-smoking vapors or whatever you call it. It's a free country and you're entitled to do what you want but I certainly don't want to be a party to it.

Apparently you must first start smoking regular cigarettes and become addicted to them before you're allowed to become interested in the ALTERNATIVE of vaping.
With the economy so tight, why spend money you don't need to, unless your parents are providing it.

I probably wouldn't do this if I had not previously been a smoker. HOWEVER, I can definitely see this as an alternative to eating a lot of fattening desserts. Juices and their flavors are one of the things that I credit, so far, to my not gaining any weight. I could definitely see vaping zero nicotine flavors as a way to allow your body something yummy without the calories. JUST MHO.

One of the things I have found most helpful about ECF since I quit smoking and started vaping is how supportive everyone has been to me. I have learned that people vape for different reasons, for some it is to switch to a healthier habit with no intention of ever quitting, for others it is to get to a nic free life, etc. Who am I to judge someone just because that person wasn't silly enough to get hooked on cigarettes to begin with.

To addresses your questions NLite- V4L has a good reputation here, I haven't personally used them though. I am new to vaping and am still on my starter pv, which is an 808, from myvaporstore- they also have an "ultimate" starter kit that is a good value. For not much more than some of these starter kits you could also get a reo mini, a small bottom feeder- which is the pv I am saving up for.

Make sure when you order liquid to get 0 nic since you don't have an addiction. Ordering sample packs is a great way to taste different flavors.

Yes, for me it's all about taste, like I said in my original post. And thank you for the VG vs PG answer - I didn't know about the difference, so that was definitely helpful. Thanks to MaileSmyth also - I had read bad reviews on the 510 but I think that may just be because so many people like the eGo better.

As for a couple of the other posters....Wow....not sure what to say. Why is it odd that I have been researching it? Starter kits aren't exactly cheap so why wouldn't I research it? I may as well roll up my money and vape that if I don't do some homework before I buy. I never said I was trying to recreate a smoking experience, I said I like the TASTE.

And I don't see it as wasting money - I don't NEED to go to movies, go on vacations, buy movies or music....I actually NEED very little, but I have decided I WANT to buy a pv. So if you see it as wasting money, that's fine, it's your opinion, but it's something I want.

As you see, we self professed "addicts" are so hesitant to help you get in. :) Because once you have the instrument, it's so easy to try a few interesting flavors with nicotine, just to try it to see what it's like, the same way you "sampled" your friend's PV. Many of us started cigarettes that way and have been hooked for decades. I can see this as a recreational object, another way to sample the world. I'd rather you not try it, but if you do, assuming you're a legal adult, start small in case you don't like it.

As you see, we some self professed "addicts" are so hesitant to help you get in.

You've come here to do the research as to what to buy, and you know there is such a thing as 0 mg nicotine juice. Just by researching before plunking down cash you've already started smarter then a lot of us did. And if you factor in that you've not gotten yourself hooked on nicotine, that smart factor jumps a few orders of magnitude.

Even if they were to decide that inhaling vaporized PG was bad for you and shut down the respiratory therapy business and the ecig industry, since you aren't following up on a cigarette habit and aren't feeding an addiction, you probably won't even inhale. I mean - why bother? You're doing it for flavor - and last I knew, there were no taste buds lining the bronchial tubes, right?

As for the risk factor of picking up an addiction... well, yeah - I mean, not as if you could have picked up a pack of cigarettes out of curiosity at the corner store any time and tried them - right? ;)

The whole 510 vs eGo battle is just the typical thing you find on forums. People pick one and rabidly defend it against all others.

Truth is, they're both very good pieces of equipment - just made for people who have different needs/desires. For me, the eGo is better suited, the 510 would probably be a bit inadequate. In your case though, based on the criteria you have given, the eGo would be overkill and a 510 would fit the bill better.

Enjoy!

Despite all evidence to the contrary - this is usually a pretty friendly place.

Perhaps you should read the new front page of the forum.

Who can use an e-cigarette ?
Electronic cigarettes are used by smokers over 18 who are looking for a better alternative. No one else should use one.

I would not recommend a PV to a non-smoker...just a personal choice. But it is a free country and you were asking for advice:p

Precisely. The OP was asking for advice. In other words, he brought it up. Nobody recruited him or coerced him into anything.

I dunno - I guess I just never was any good at telling other adults how to think or act. And I have a lousy sense of balance - I always end up falling off the soapbox. :p
