Some of you might not have seen this news item. I read it and wondered: If e-cigs could be purchased wholesale, how many could be bought and given to the world's smokers for $500-million? And wouldn't that result in a higher quit-success rate than quit-or-die? Or is this just a way to transfer money to Big Pharma for all the NRT stuff that will be bought and distributed? What a fraud!

Gates, Bloomberg Pledge $500 Million in Antismoking Effort

Billionaires Bill Gates and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced yesterday that they'll contribute a combined $500 million to a worldwide antismoking campaign, the New York Times reports.

The new campaign, dubbed Mpower, will receive $250 million from Bloomberg's foundation during the next four years, in addition to $125 million already donated. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation plans to give $125 million during a five-year period.

Bloomberg has spoken out against smoking for years, but this is a new effort by the Gates Foundation, the Times reports. The campaign will encourage governments to raise tobacco taxes, ban smoking in public places, outlaw cigarette giveaways and kid-directed advertising, start advertising campaigns against smoking, and offer people help in quitting.

If only we had somebody with that type of money on our side. Like you said - purchase wholesale - give away to smokers and see what happens. I bet the success rate for switching over would be in our favor.

None of us early adoptors have fallen over dead yet, so all seems well. Think about it: If the world's smokers switched to e-smoking, the benefits would be beyond calculation. That, of course, won't happen, but every e-smoker is one less individual facing the known health consequences of tobacco cigarettes.

We need to gather together, like in that Coke commercial, and join in a chorus of "Give E a chance."
