Exactly, that's the best kind of black. and I totally agree about the videos, I think Metal and videos is an atrocious mix.

Symphonic Black always felt epic, lol, and sometimes I need work/driving to be a little epic...Fear Factory, mostly Obsolete and back, is there when I need to get pumped.

Sometimes making something epic is completely necessary lol. When I used to work in an assembly factory, I would have my headphones on, and right before lunch I'd always listen to Dimmu Borgir's Gateways or The Serpentine Offering, then I'd go to lunch and feel like it was that much more worth it to be there haha

Motorola assembly/repair was where I got the most use out of my metal, just felt appropriate to an environment where you had daily quotas for production.

Yeah, maybe there's a direct correlation between the fast paced music and fast paced work environment. I considered myself one of the faster workers, whereas some of the others were listening to hip hop or country or whatever, and didn't put out as good numbers...just a hypothesis:D

Nothing like speed to get you cranking out the work. :D

Definatly cant make it thru the day w/o some metal. The thing i saw that was amusing was someone saying cof n dimmu are black metal. They used to be, well over a decade ago, but def. not now. :)
My usual goto tunes for if i gotta get motivated to move is Meshuggah(sickening, future breed machine, new millenium scionide christ) , strapping young lad is also get up n move music. If im chilling i go for borknagar, ics vortex, emperor or opeth. But theres still nothing better than an ice cold beer, my 5v box w/ a 3ohm 5ml carto tank filled w/ ry4, and amon amarth!

Nice thread. I'm a first generation metal head, meaning the first generation of bands, not family descent. :p

Celtic Frost is my favorite, along with Tom Warrior's latest project "Tryptykon", who I saw not too long ago. Of course, Slayer (saw them on their World Painted Blood tour- great show), Metallica (early days), Venom, Kreator, Destruction, Death, Dark Angel, Bathory, Tiamat, Opeth, Sepultura, etc. Actually, Max from Sepultura crashed at my apt. back in 89 or 90.

I haven't kept up with the explosion of bands that followed the first gen. Its mindboggling how many there are.

Jeff Beck (who in my humble opinion invented metal), Jimmy Page, Jorma Cocanan, Jimy Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Ronnie James Dio, were my favorits back in the 70's. Haven't really found anything past Metalica and Iron Maiden that I like these days, but my mind is wide open.

A pretty good "newer" metal band for some one who likes alot of classic rock is Opeth. They go between almost every genre of rock and metal. They have alot of deep purple in em(i think). They do do a good amount of the "death growl" but just as much as theirs clean vocals.

Welcome to ECF! I'm a metal head from way back. I love old school thrash and speed metal, death, hardcore and punk. My all time favorite bands are Sepultura, Pantera, Demon Hunter, Living Sacrifice, pre Black Album Metallica, pre Countdown to Extinction Megadeth, and Hatebreed. Always good to have another metal head on ECF!

You might like Strapping Young Lad (Devin Townsend) and check out In Flames (anything before and including the album "Clayman") Opeth is also a great band as dguer3rd said. They are a very progressive band that dabble in many genres and subgenres of metal, their latest album "Heritage" is solely 70's style prog, featuring all clean vocals. Check it out and let us know what you think.

I've really lost track of Cradle and Dimmu. There's just soooo many bands it's hard to stay on top of them all.

Principle from Cradle is def a BM classic and my fav from them.

Amon Amarth never ceases to disappoint also and they continue to remain great, IMHO.

Agreed. If you dig a little bit into the history of some/a lot of these bands, you'll find that they traded and switched members a lot, like it was professional sports or something. I'm sure that has a lot of influence on the direction they decide to go.

IMO Dimmu's latest releases outshine the later stuff Cradle puts out, but that's just me.
