99% of my dealing with the public have been good. Most people are curious and actually like the idea of vaping once it's explained to them. I've only had one "bad" experience. I was waiting for a mall shuttle at lunch and happily vaping away when two women walked up to the stop. One of them started making that annoying "coughing" that non-smokers like to make around smokers. She made some rude remark about smoking, thinking I wouldn't say or do anything. I turned around, looked at her and said "This is not a cigarette and I'm not smoking." She and her friend got very red in the face and walked away. I laughed my ... off at them!

hehe! I hope to have an opportunity like that soon!

One thing I have noticed: I tell people I'm quitting smoking and using a pv. They immediately respond "well .... you're not really quitting smoking". So ...... I politely state that their perception is being fooled. The smoke isn't really smoke. I'm not firing up anything. Now, of course I've already explained this ... but for some reason some people don't want to let it go. They feel like they're letting me off the hook or something, and they seem uncomfortable with this.

Has anyone else come across this?

Yep, sure have. One word. Mother.

I showed her my Riva, explained the whole deal to her, health benefits, and so on, and she fixated on the nicotine. "Well, you're still using nicotine." I asked her if she had a problem with patches, gum, or lozenges. Nope. No problem. I told her this was the same thing and then lifted up my shirt sleeve to show her what the patch did to my skin during my recent attempt to quit. After seeing the rash and the scabs from where it had tried (and succeeded in some spots) to melt my skin off, she shut up.

Frankly, I don't care what she thinks. I'm 43 and I've quit smoking. If she can't (or won't) understand that, too damn bad. That goes for the rest of the population, too. I'm proud of myself. I feel empowered, and I have hope - something I've never felt before when trying to quit over the years.

My mom is on the same wagon. When I vape in the house she gets ...... off, and somehow thinks it's wrong but can't come up with a reason. Then when she walks in a room I'm vaping in, she acts like it stinks! Sometimes I think smoking is more "publicly acceptable."

I had a waitress tonight come on over to the table I was at in a sports bar and start giggling. She told me that she was coming over to throw me out for smoking inside, then she saw that it was a PV, she knew what it was, but didn't know too much about it. My wife and I talked to her about it for a good 5 minutes. I chain VAPE, and from a distance it REALLY looks like I'm smoking. When I VAPE I take in like 4 BIG drags in a row, so I'm surrounded by vapor. It drives my wife crazy and she vapes. I guess I chain VAPE till my ego shuts off because it's been on too long (what is that like 15 seconds or something). Anyway the area we were sitting in, there was a great big ol cloud emanating from it. Hehe. :)

Oh about the whole theres something wrong with vaping......well I have porpousley not told ANY of my family exactly HOW I've managed to quit smoking, mainly because I know how most of them feel about vaping. They see vaping as the exact same thing as smoking. I have talked to them about it before I quit.
I told my dad that I didn't even miss smoking, and that I didn't want to smoke. He knows how hard it is to quit. His response was "the drugs you're on must be REALLY good, that you don't even miss smoking". We joked about better living through chemicals. All I tell my family is that the nicotine replacement system that I'm using is much better then any other one I've tried before.
He'll I'm almost 40, and my parents are 69, I guess I look like it as I would just be picking a fight with them if I wasn't omitting this. I plan to let everyone in on it when I'm 6 months free from a cigarette.
Also just to say it, I don't think I could have have quit smoking without this forum too. It is as important to me as the e-cig's are.
I guess I look at the forum as Important to me as an AA meeting is to an alcoholic.
You have to give it away to keep it. So I want to treat every new bee as I wish I would have been treated when I first started eciggarettes.

I've had 4 encounters.
3 good.
1 meh.
The one meh was when I was hanging out with friends. I explained it to them and they had that whole "I don't know what's in it."
Told them 3 times that there are 4 ingredients to liquid
PG
VG
Nicotine
Flavorings
They still didn't give up on the fact that those 4 liquids are reasonably safe.

not public per say, but I had a young boy tonight maybe 12 or 13 asked me were I got my e cig, he knew what it was, and told me he wish his parents would get one because they smoke a lot:( That brings up another issue how to deal with children with questions about vaping. I have a 9 yr old son who doesn't like it just like he didn't like me smoking. I would be lying to you if I said I knew what to tell them about it. I don't want them to think that it is a good thing for them, but I would like them to know that its a good thing to help their parents quit smoking. Mostly I just avoid the questions:unsure: any other thought or helpful suggestions?

Yep, a few people act like I haven't "really quit". They constantly ask about what nicotine level I'm at like when I get to 0 and dont use the pv THEN i'll have quit! I never told anyone my aim was to quit to begin with (quit nicotine that is) and infact told people that now I can ENJOY my cigarette, not that I was using it to get off nic.

I dont saying anything but uggh I feel a little disappointed that someone close to me shows no pride that I quit when they are the one who wanted me to for the last 25 years!

Maybe that you are using it to quit one habit at a time, nicotine first, habit later? And this way your health will start getting better now before you've quit

Just going to throw this out there for all newer members - check out the thread here http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/payments.php about supporting the site! It's not free - and like many, I don't think I'd have successfully made the transition without the support I found here. If you can't afford to to pay the very reasonable "supporting member" fee click on one of the ads...btw - once you become a supporting member the ads go away!

And in a related topic the hubs is a non-never-smoker. He's glad I'm not smoking but keeps asking when I'm going to 0mg. I'm between 6-12mg, depending on the time of day and flavor. I've tried 0 mg - I'm not "there" yet. He backed off after I went 0mg for 2 weeks and the wicked b1tch of the west moved in...lol

I haven't had many issues in public - but smoking in allowed in most places here. I've had some looks, but was always in the smoking section so no real issues.
Sorry about the hi-jack....

But nicotine on its own is no more harmful than caffeine, and in fact can be beneficial (mild analgesic, may prevent alzheimer's, etc). If the person giving you cr*p about staying on the nic drinks coffee or soda, you've got a very easy comeback -- "When are you going to quit the coffee? Switching to tea doesn't mean you quit ..."

I've told my sons that I'm an addict. I'm addicted to nicotine. They're 16, 13 & 10 - and we've had the talk for years because, while they knew I smoked, I tried to keep it from the "public"...only my neighbors and a couple of close friends and family. I was ashamed. So when they went thru the DARE program at school I didn't want them to rat me out ;-) (our program focuses a lot on underage smoking and drinking in the 4th grade program).

They're glad I'm doing something less dangerous to my health. And they LOVE that the garage doesn't smell anymore and I don't smell like febreeze and smoke anymore.

Hi, MEEKYJANE!

One thing to explain to him is that smoking addiction goes beyond just the nicotine. For some people, the movement of putting something in your mouth, and the action of the deep breathing, is something that we associate with feeling calm, kind of like when kids suck their thumbs.

For some people, the patch, lozenges, and gum don't work. This works exactly like those, but it has a few benefits:

1. It gives us a thumb to suck on, making us calmer and more prone to quit smoking forever.

2. What we blow out doesn't contain all of the thousands of chemicals (4000, it is believed), that cigarette smoke has. In fact, what we exhale is not smoke. It's water vapor. That's why it doesn't smell bad, make your teeth yellow, make your tongue yellow, coat your lungs with tar, or make you cough like you did when you smoked.

3. Explain to him that many, many doctors approve of this method of quitting smoking - some of them suggest it to their patients, in fact - and that it has a higher rate of success than the patch, gum, lozenges, and Chantix combined.

Ask him: If you had two cars you needed to use to get to a destination, and one of them was filled with all kinds of dangerous things that could kill you, and one was not, which he'd prefer you drive. Vaping is just like that; it's getting us to our goal of never smoking again without being filled with things that will kill us.

And the most important thing to tell him is that you made a mistake by ever smoking in the first place, and that he should keep in mind through watching you struggle that he should never, ever start and make the same mistake that you did.

Hope that helps? :)

I work at a Bar/Grill and we have went to no smoking recently. Well, there are a lot of folks who like the place and want to continue coming in, without having to constantly run outside to have a cigarette. Many have taken up vaping since I introduced it to a few co-workers and customers and the word is spreading. I went to the bar across the street where they can still smoke cigarettes (because it is not a restaurant...with a bar) and got bombarded by folks wanting to know if I could order them a kit and get them set up...lol. I've only had ONE person in the two plus months since I began vaping, question it. A customer was paying for their food and said, "oh, I see you can still smoke at the bar huh?" I replied, "no, you cannot smoke, but you can vape." Got a real strange look but no more was said...it was too funny!

Not a hijack at all! I had no idea that this forum ran on donations. Now that I know, I'll use some of the money I'm saving from not smoking analogs to support this site, its members, and the great people here who have helped me be very happily analog-free for 8 days. Thank you for that link. :)
