Due to several shopping sprees at Super T's going out of business sale, I will soon have two new mechanical mods. I have picked up some Samsung 25R batteries to use in them. Back in the day, when I used a mechanical mod without a Kick, I had a policy...If I hit the switch and it doesn't fire, I stop, pull the battery, and figure out what's wrong.

Will this policy keep me from venting a battery if something shorts in the mod/atty/connection?

Will any of these new batteries like the HE2, 25R, VTC, give any warning prior to venting?

Thanks.

You're on the right track djdavis. Here's a video of what happens if things work out OK when a battery vents in a mod:

18650 Batteries vented inside of a mechanical mod.

As you can see, if the batteries are good there is a lot of heat buildup before they vent and it takes a bit of time. There have been cases when people have had an apparently good battery blow up, but they are rare though they do happen. These may be because of counterfeit batteries or maybe one in a hundred thousand batteries are not up to par, I don't know. The HE2, 25R, VTC's are great as long as they are authentic. My list of known, good battery suppliers is:

Illumination Supply
RTD Vapor
Lighthound
Orbtronic
Battery Junction

There are certainly more than that, those are just the ones that I consider good. I stay away from any supplier I can't find reliable information on.

The 'if it doesn't fire, stop and fix it' thing is also very good and I do that too. Also, if there is heat developed anywhere but the atty, there is a problem that needs to be fixed.

Congrats on the new mods!
