So Cal
I have a feeling this has been discussed in other places but I haven't come across it yet in my searches - does anyone else secretly wish that maybe a different word would come into vogue as an alternative to "vape" and "vaping"?

I'm trying to get my pack-a-day husband to see the light and at least give vaping a try, but I think a combination of things, including the fact that it's called "vaping", is making him pretty disinterested. I can't even say it to other people, to be honest, it just sounds, well, weird. Maybe it's because it's foreign-sounding from the world of smoking vocabulary.

Anyone ever refer to it as "puffing" instead? I'm not totally wild about that one either, but it sounds more cig-related, since people do puff on cigarettes. Of course if you think about that and associate it with powder puffs, that doesn't sound wildly masculine either. :)

Anyway, I just wanted to see if anyone has a few fun alternative words they use to describe what we are doing. I think I saw someone refer to it as fogging, which was kind of interesting. I told my husband I was fake smoking, so he calls it "faking", but I doubt that's one many people would want to use.

Any thoughts?

Any thoughts?

I believe we should separate ourselves from cigarettes (and tobacco) as far as possible. I personally do not want PVs to be labeled as "e-cigarettes" anymore (funny, considering the name of this forum); nor do I agree with the term "e-Smoking".

Cigarettes and smoking are in the forefront of social attention right now, and with good reason. Cigarettes and smoking account for nearly 1/2 million deaths each year in the U.S. alone. So, NO, I do not want to be bundled in with cigarettes/smoking at all; in terms of vernacular, regulation, or social disdain.

now let's all get "fogged".

Techno fogging. LOL

I didn't care what they called it, as I was ready to find something to replace smoking that didn't involve anxiety and drugs. I do refer to it as a PV most of the time (personal vaporizer).

Sounds like he just isn't really ready to give up the ciggys. Maybe he'll come around on his own time by your example of how well it works.

Another option for him might be Swedish Snus. Discrete, inexpensive and provides the nicotine smokers want and MAOIs that we lose when we go over to straight e-cig use (which many can't go without at first). Quite a few people have quit smoking using it. It isn't like chew/dip/snuff... I use it on occasion. Very clean and packaged into a small tea bag like material that is put against the gum/lip. No spitting. Info can be found here Smokeless tobacco - E-Cigarette Forum

I know what you mean. I haven't found a great substitute for the word, but using it outside this forum sounds like it has some vague drug connotations. People tend to look at you twice and not just because they haven't heard the word before. I'm also not crazy about e-cig because it doesn't really differentiate it. Although, that one is useful if you have a smoker who seems interested in trying it. Words are funny things. :|

Changing the name might make it more difficult for those who want to find us to find us. Know what I'm sayin? The "e-cig" terminology might be easiest way to get cigarette smokers to find us for now.

But yeah, I can relate to wanting to somehow establish "vaping" as something else, something healthier. Good thread! Words are so powerful.

Just my own personal opinion based on my own experiences in the last 1.5 years of vaping.

Yes, I actually LIKE the term vaping, as I have found it to be most acceptable in my circles, but maybe that's a regional thing or something.

When I encounter someone showing curiosity or inquiring concerning what they see me doing, I give them a short explanation/demonstration, tell them how it has worked for me and refer them to this forum. If it's someone I have a particular interest in their journey into our vaping world and they do some initial research but still have questions, I will help them within my knowledge base. I also have referred people to favorite vendors.

I try my best not to relate this device and/or process to cigarettes any more than necessary, due to many of the reasons already mentioned.

In the beginning, I, like many others THOUGHT I wanted something that looked and tasted like my Marlboros, but luckily, I learned later that I don't want it to look like one, don't want it to taste like one, and certainly don't want it to smell like one.

I have been fortunate enough to get totally away from "smoking" so I try my best to stay away from the terminogy related to it.

Maybe this attitude is a bit preachy and I certainly don't intend it that way, but with society's current opinion on "smoking" and "cigarettes", I try every day to find ways to introduce others to this technology without tying it to smoking, but rather an "alternative" to it.

My lifestyle is not where I frequent clubs or restaurants much but when I do, I sometimes approach those unfornate souls standing outside and 20 feet from the entrance, total strangers, and show them there is an alternative, then demonstrate, give a brief history of my experience if they are interested and then direct them to this forum, their best source for learning more. If they are interested enough, like I was, they will explore it, if not, nothing I can say will convince them.

The one thing that I do try to inform them about is that the kiosks and convenience stores/truck stops and smoke stores are selling supplies at a huge markup and usually with limited choices/warranty and that their best bet is forum vendors, who yes, are making a little money as they should for all their hard work, but not the markup of the retailers and much better service and product choices.

Sorry for the long post and have a great day vaping....

When I'm asked at work if I just went and had a cigarette, I just say 'no, I went out to enjoy the fresh air'... and if they don't believe me, I add in that I need a vaporizer for breathing properly, flash it quickly, and get back to work :p (I can vape at work, just prefer to take the steps to have an actual break and go outside for some fresh air!)
