Every new subculture has its own terminology. It's part of belonging. If you don't know the lingo you can't hang out with the cool kids. (Word! :p)

It also makes sense that if you're trying to distance yourself from cigs you'd opt for a phrase that doesn't just replicate smoking terminology. "Vape" is to the e-cig/PV what "smoke" is to a regular cigarette in terms of what comes out of the end, so it's a natural progression. That said, I'm not a massive fan of "vape" either.

In my spare time I do a lot of theatre lighting, and I'm known for my penchant for working hazers (smoke machines) into the rig. They're invaluable for creating atmosphere. For years when actors have grumbled about a venue full of smoke I've been telling them that it's just harmless water vapour. The hazer fluid we use is about 40% PG, 60% water. So essentially I'll be breathing in (and out) the same stuff when I vape.

So I'm thinking my alternative to "vape" will be "hazing" or "creating atmosphere".

I quite like "analog" as an alternative to regular cigarettes. As an IT techie it makes me chuckle. I do wonder whether the e-cig will have a nemesis counter-culture of retro anaolg champions a la the vinyl revolution ("the paper smokes, they just *sound* better, ya know?")

The only term I really have an issue with is "juice". So much of this forum is filled with people searching for the "perfect juice", or getting a "juice fix", or freaking out because they've run out of "juice". That right there reeks of a drug culture that I don't really want to buy into.

Each to their own.

If we're casting votes here (LOL) ...

I don't understand the discomfort with the words vape and vaping. I DO have problems with using the word analog when referring to cigarettes, and e-cigarette when referring to our devices. We don't smoke any more (those of us who have completely freed ourselves).

I'm far from alone in calling the device a PV (Personal Vaporizer). We use a battery powered device which heats a liquid to its vaporization point, and inhale that vapor. i.e., we vape.

I scratch my head when I see someone say they're uncomfortable with the term. I mean, what's so strange about it? Seriously. I think it's far STRANGER the way some vapers say they're SMOKING their PV. NO they're not. There's no combustion, no smoke ... therefore, not smoking.

The atomizer is vaporizing the liquid.

LOL. That's shaving a pretty close hair, there. That's like saying I don't blend ice for a margarita...the blender does!

well technically a "smoker" doesn't smoke either, the cigarette does, they are just the sucker on the other end. :)

Eh, just had to throw that in.

Ditto. That's the only term I have issue with too. Especially around little children.

I like the term Vape and Vaping. It's okay with me and my family. I don't much like being labeled anything, whether it be smoker or vaporer or drinker... but if you're going to call me something, at least call me a vaporer. I'm proud of that term.
I, too, chuckle at the term Analog. So does my family. They chuckle every time I say it... they love that I've distanced myself far enough away from cigs that I now term them differently.
As far as condoms, syrynges, buttplugs, vodka, .... those are just a giggle to me too. I feel like a church kid giggleing at something mildly "naughty".

haha, getting a kick out of the name brainstorms.

I once heard "old Grandpa cigarettes" as a descriptive for analogs, in a thread somewhere. I once used in outloud myself, to the youngest one, as I pointed out a young whippersnapper outside smoking one. "Look at that poor soul, still smoking those old grandpa cigarettes". He doubled over laughing at the irony of it all. (old antique me who vapes a futuristic electronic cig vrs the young man in his 20's smoking an old fashioned antique analog).

When I'm with friends at a bar or so, and want to go out (I don't vape inside, except in bathrooms), I say I'm "going out for a fake smoke." And I refer to it as my fake cigarette. I try to keep it as unpretentious as possible. Don't feel like going into a discussion over what the word "vape" means. I unintentionally look pretty goth, with my eastern european features and black clothes, so try to avoid anything remotely reminiscent of the word "vampire" or "vamp", or any words starting with the letter V.

The only complain I have about the term "vaping" or "vape" is that most people I know assume I'm referring to ......... I have far more friends who smoke pot than tobacco.

I dislike the term juice. Not because of the drug connection (seriously, it IS a drug. I'm not ashamed of it) but because I just think it's not juice. I call it "vape fluid" or "e-liquid" or "nic liquid".

I resist calling my device an e-cigarette though. I dislike the connection being made (even here) between the two. I never intended my PV to be a replacement for smoking and I don't want other people (mostly of the busybody-and-bureaucrat type) thinking they're related.
