Every new subculture has its own terminology. It's part of belonging. If you don't know the lingo you can't hang out with the cool kids. (Word!

)
It also makes sense that if you're trying to distance yourself from cigs you'd opt for a phrase that doesn't just replicate smoking terminology. "Vape" is to the e-cig/PV what "smoke" is to a regular cigarette in terms of what comes out of the end, so it's a natural progression. That said, I'm not a massive fan of "vape" either.
In my spare time I do a lot of theatre lighting, and I'm known for my penchant for working hazers (smoke machines) into the rig. They're invaluable for creating atmosphere. For years when actors have grumbled about a venue full of smoke I've been telling them that it's just harmless water vapour. The hazer fluid we use is about 40% PG, 60% water. So essentially I'll be breathing in (and out) the same stuff when I vape.
So I'm thinking my alternative to "vape" will be "hazing" or "creating atmosphere".
I quite like "analog" as an alternative to regular cigarettes. As an IT techie it makes me chuckle. I do wonder whether the e-cig will have a nemesis counter-culture of retro anaolg champions a la the vinyl revolution ("the paper smokes, they just *sound* better, ya know?")
The only term I really have an issue with is "
juice". So much of this forum is filled with people searching for the "perfect
juice", or getting a "
juice fix", or freaking out because they've run out of "juice". That right there reeks of a drug culture that I don't really want to buy into.
Each to their own.
