I have an aspire atlantis and have some Japanese cotton and 26 guage kenthal wire. I want to try rebuilding the coil and it does not seem hard, 5/32 drill bit, etc but how do you keep the coil from burning the rubber grommet? I think the stock coil has some resistance wire soldered on to the ends. I've seen people rebuild on Youtube but they never mention anything about the whole coil turning red.

Don't know man. Been wondering the same thing though.

Personally, I'm not gonna worry about it until I have a few dozen spent coils to work with, then I just might look into getting some nickel wire and making a spot welder to do it myself...
I've read that people have had no issues using wire without soldering. I will be building one myself once I get a pair of cutters. I've only had it 3 days and its soaked in juice where if I take a draw I get hit with a bit of juice spikes.

I haven't tried to recoil the Atlantis but have re-wicked with KGD cotton. I just torched the existing coil and reused it, works fine. The most tedious part of the whole deal was replacing the little piece of filler that is next to the feed holes, think i'll leave that in next time. Only reason i can see to pull it out would be to rinse old juice out of it. Been using my re-wicked coil since last Friday and it's working great. No leaks or gurgles and the flavor seems to be enhanced. Good luck!

I just rebuilt mine with a horizontal micro coil.. took some trial and error for the wicking. had to make the coil a couple of drill bit sizes smaller than the holes in order for the wicking to work. 10 wraps 26ga on 1.9mm bit at 1 ohm with rayon at 20 watts and vaping great! i even did some dry pulsing to make sure it the coil was glowing from the center out and no hot legs. Im tempted to drill the hole a little larger so I can go up one size on the coil but its pretty good the way it is. Also, I used a little piece of 400 ss mesh to block the other two holes in the head. seems to be working good so far with no leaks but its still less than a day of use.

**Update- I just changed to a 28g 8 wrap 1.9mm 1.3ohm 15 watts rayon and it seems a little smoother and all around better..

I can't find anything around that I can use to make a coil around the size of 5/32. I'm gonna do 6 wraps of 26g. Of course every Walmart I checked was out of those single drill bits.

I posted a thread with pics on my rebuild awhile back. 26g is about the fattest wire you would want to go with. For higher ohm builds I go to 28 or 30g. 26g is perfect for a sub ohm build. It's a much easier build than the old dual heads or any smaller stock head. Using KGD is tricky since it saturates so quickly and can cause gurgling. Try different coil IDs and find your sweet spot. I hope you mean 5/64" bit which is 1.98438mm. Even without measuring you could try a mini screw driver that fits in the hole with a good amount of play.

Hmm ok I may have a small screw driver in the car somewhere. People on reddit mentioned using a 5/32.

By the way what charger are you guys using? My ego USB screw on charger broke already and I've had it only 3 days. Light just stays red on the charger. I really wish the sub ohm battery would have been charged via micro or mini USB.

Those small ego chargers aren't recessed and screwing the heavy sub ohm on there can ruin them.

Yes 5/32" would be used for making the same size spaced vertical coil that it originally came with. My post was about changing to a horizontal micro coil.

I think I'll probably do verticle first before trying horizontal. I may just be able to take out the original coil, hold it over the stove and then rewrap it in Japanese cotton. I think I found some Allen keys I can use to create one.

**Update #2- I just started experimenting with a spaced coil using 28g 7wraps 1.9mm 1.4 ohms and I think it wicks better and potentially last a little longer before gunking up and needing replaced.

Well I tried it last night, 6 wraps of 26g, but I couldn't get it to fire right. It would only produce a slight vapor and then some burnt taste. Not sure why, but maybe because I couldn't snip the ends very close. Probably because I had such a hard time wrapping the cotton around that the coil got squished. Wasted a good amount of cotton too. Not sure what I did wrong but it just wasn't working.

Try a simple horizontal build like this! You will be amazed at how easy it is and how good it works! I've tried a few different horizontal variations including a parallel build with a drilled out hole and this is just as good and so simple!

6 wraps with 28g kanthal wire around a 5/64" or 2mm drill bit - let me know if you have any questions!

I think that you may get some leaking into the base if you don't put something in the sleeves behind the other two holes that the coil is not using. You can stuff a piece of a cotton pad in there or what I'm doing is putting a tiny square of 400 ss mesh.

Here is a quick video which shows how to do a horizontal the same way I do. I just use 28ga wire and spaced coil instead. I also block the two extra holes with a little piece of cotton pad or 400 ss mesh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HFLD6iBUEc

Thanks so much guys. Was able to build a horizontal coil using a 1/8 drill bit..not the best coil since its harder to wrap on a smaller bit but I finally got it to fire. I used my Japanese cotton and had some leaking into my mouth but fluffed the cotton some more and pulled it through a bit more and now 6mg juice is hitting nicely and feels like 12.

My mutation x RDA is coming tomorrow with 10 pre built .8 ohm coils and more cotton. What sucks is I have 12mg juice that I haven't tried yet and its new but can't vape it in the Atlantis since its too strong.

The first horizontal coil I did on a 5/32 bit didn't work because it was too big but the one on the 1/8th works fine. I'll be sticking to horizontal from now on. Vertical was a pita to get working. Initially I felt like the shop had sold me guitar string or something because nothing was working.

4/3 wrap with 24g kanthal on a .162 machine thread screw...close wrap..comes out between .54-.57 ohms using ojc pad...cut the length of the pad and wrap the coil...wicks like a champ hits like champ..also leaving cotton wrap around wicking holes...also have had no issues with any burning or melting of rubber grommet...Oh...and the wife vapes as much as she breathes(love you babe)...not a dry hit yet..been lasting a week or so..
