HI all,

I have a T-Rex 510 setup and have been just using and charging batteries as usual. I just came across a USB passthrough which seems to be perfect for me since I sit at a desk most of the day. When shopping for a USB passthrough with 510 connections, are they all about the same? Any ones you especially recommend?

No there are differences. Some are straight 5v PT's and if you use these you may want to consider a wall wort if you have an older computer or at least a USB hub with and external power supply. These models tend to need about 2amps or power and the typical USB port on your computer is 500 ma.

There are also ones that use an inline battery that will regulate the voltage down to around 3.7 similar to your T-Rex.

Finally you have the PT battery's which are just like you current batt but the endcap screws off to reveal a USB connection. You can use these either as a passthrough or just disconnect the wire and walk away like it a regular ego/riva bat. I'll try and find a link for you when I get the chance.

No they are not all the same.

There is one kind with an inline battery - I think (not sure) those may be usable on a PC's USB - I think it is basically constantly charging the battery and you are vaping off the battery. I have heard (not sure) that you cannot vape these right away, that people have issues with them too. However, IF it works, once the battery part is charged you can also unplug it and walk around with this kind.

There is a kind with just a battery shape holding area that is not a real battery. These run right off the wire power and can be used immediately. But you cannot use them on a PC's USB since they may draw more than the 500ma PC USB provides. I recommend a 2amp USB to AC adapter.

Then I think there are beefier Ego versions of the above two styles?

And there are autos and manuals (I would recommend manual)

And there may be 3.7v and 5v - I recommend 3.7v if you want to use it with the same atomizers and cartos as your 510 or Ego. 3.7v is already hotter than Ego or slim 510.

And there are real joye brand and clone, and some clones are crappy

If I was getting one, I would get Joye brand 510 or Ego 3.7v manual without inline battery and I would get a 2 amp AC to USB to use it on. I already use 2amp 4-port USB to AC adapters at home and at work (Rosewill RUC6181 from NewEgg.com) for charging up to 4 batteries - I could just remove all of the battery cables and use that. I would not charge batteries on it at the same time.

Thanks Puffadder. That does look like a nice unit. I might have gone with the 1000mA version, but the 650 is in stock and that's what I think I have anyway on my kit I got from them, so that will work well I think.

I have a bunch of USB wall worts. I assume there is not problem using them if for some reason I only had a power outlet and no computer?

Edit: I see you just posted a variable voltage one, too. That's kinda neat, as it seems you can experiment with the various voltages I read about so much on here (but don't totally understand yet).

    in a cave, eh?
I would recommend you plug your passthrough into the wall wart, NOT the computer's USB port. If you went with a 5 volt passthrough, that would be your only option anyway.

Regarding the variable voltage passthrough. Variable voltage will give you more vapor and flavor than your current set up. Having said that, the variable voltage passthrough settings are pretty wimpy. You might be happier with a 5 volt passthrough, instead.
