Seven Turkish Angoras (I used to breed and show them - great cats!), a Weimaraner, British Lab, 2 Congo Greys (Charlie is in my avatar), an Umbrella 'Too, a Spectacled Amazon, a Senegal who is a feathered terrorist, and a wee little half-moon conure.

I also have two angora rabbits (one French, one Satin). I handspin yarn, so they're a pleasant addition on top of being quite useful.

Oh, and a Betta named Hannibal. All of you are lucky that he can't get out of his fish bowl.

LOL on one pic you see he has no teeth LOL......My poor baby he is so old......

Lol! My oldest male dog will be 8 years old sometime next month, I think. Since we found him abandoned, we're not sure of his exact birth date, but he was around 10 weeks old when we first adopted him around Memorial Day weekend of 2003. The next dog we adopted is older than he is, but I have no idea by how much. She is likely around 9-10 years old. She is really getting gray around the muzzle and eyes, and she has some arthritis in her hips. But she is just as frisky as ever!! She still loves to play and chase her ball around the house!

We have one dog at a time, that's all we can handle.

Seeing them getting older, knowing that their time is coming, that is hard.
And when they pass, that is always a crushing blow.

I know I cry my eyes out every time, that's for sure.

But what I wonder is, how people who have only one dog feel when they pass.
Do you get another dog immediately, or is there some sort of mourning period that you observe first?

When our last dog passed, I went out that very day and started looking for another.
I couldn't bear to have our home empty of canine companionship, and I wanted to shift my sadness to happiness as soon as possible.

But others I have spoken too couldn't understand how I could get another dog so quickly.
All I know is that I had to.

When we adopted our oldest male, Rocky, it had only been about 2 months since we had put our Beagle, George, to sleep. He was 14 at the time, had severe arthritis, and had developed Cancer. It broke my heart to have to put him down, but he was suffering. We didn't plan on getting another dog so soon, but when we found Rocky, I just couldn't bear to take him to the local shelter!! He had been abused, starved, and beaten so severely the vet said he had no reaction to pain stimulus! And he was just a puppy! About 10 weeks old! Coincidentally, we think Rocky was born around the time we put George to sleep. Rocky is a Coonhound mix, and we knew he would be a big dog. But we just had to keep him. It took awhile to gain his trust, but he's grown into such a loving, and gentle dog!
I think its up to each person to decide when they want to adopt another pet. It isn't right or wrong when to adopt, it's just the right time for each of us. Personally, I'm glad we adopted Rocky when we did. But it doesn't mean we loved and missed George any less. Nothing can ever replace him. Just as nothing could ever replace the dogs we have now--all 4 of them!

Edit: I forgot to mention our 3 cats, too!
