Andria, you mean like this:

Close, but not exactly... those "original" style kayfuns are just too dang tall -- could you imagine putting that thing on one of those chromatic vv4s? Talk about a scepter from hell! I like the "lite" kayfuns, much more reasonable height. Wonder if slotech has any of those in rainbow finish...

So, do we have a rendezvious point for the duration of the downed forum? Maybe a #tootlepuffer thing on twitter? My new tootlepuffin goodies will be here and I'll have no place to show them off!! :w00t:

And I got some hallacious great news last night.... our fed refund will be deposited TOMORROW! Hello, new water heater! Electric instead of that smelly gas!!! YES!!! And some new shoes.. er tires... for the Silverado baby. :D

Now I know I've become middle-aged when I'm excited about a new water heater and new tires.

Just an fyi, from an energy/money standpoint, there natural gas Easter heaters are the cheapest to run..... Electric is the most expensive, slightly edging out propane (unless you have solar.i have electric, but I'm on solar :p)

The water heater will require a separate 220 volt 30 amp breaker and 10 gauge wire run from the breaker panel. 10--2 G wire.
You cannot just tie it in to the dryer one. Not safe at all.

And do not wrap any tootle coils with 10 gauge wire.

This is correct...... Two 10 gauge lines was how we ran ours

Also, the newer gas model dryers do not stink. I think they are built better and I absolutely Love the fact that the dryer is always done before the washer. When we had an electric dryer, I was always waiting for the dryer to finish so I could put the washer contents in. Laundry is done a Lot faster now.

Even towels are done drying before the washer is done with a load.

I HATE gas appliances. When an electric appliance gets old, it stops working. When a gas appliance gets old, it stops burning the gas efficiently and allows extremely toxic gases such as CO (among others even more toxic!) to be emitted. When our old gas stove was on its last legs, it started smelling like an outdoor BBQ grill! NASTY!

If someday we have to replace the furnace, we'll be replacing it with electric too... electric furnaces don't emit CO!

At this point, we don't really know; we have to work out whatever it's going to cost for the EMC in our area to come in and remove the old gas water heater, run a new 220 line from the main (or just an extension from the one our dryer uses, since they're in the same "room" (read: *closet*!)) and the price of the new water heater. It won't be cheap, but we'll get a tax credit next year, and it should save us a good bit on regular expenses; that gas water heater is very old, very inefficient, and very slow, so we have to waste a lot of water just waiting for it to heat up! A new electric one might well cut our water costs nearly in half! And we'll be able to get the "levelized billing" from the gas co, since the only gas we'll be using will be for the furnace. Depending on how much the water heater effort runs, we'll be able to determine how nice a set of tires we can afford. We're in our EMC's Extremely Good Books, so if it's too much, they might finance it.

I don't usually give advice on home wiring, but if you are paying for an installation, I would suggest you not use anyone that says this is an option. A water heater should be on a dedicated circuit. A professional costs much less money than a house fire. :)

Your water heater will need replacement due to sediment build up before it will need to bed replaced for parts worn out :p
I just calculated energy costs between electric and gas
Life time energy cost for electric $74,220
Life time energy cost for gas $26,340
It's something to think about when the budget is as tight as you have mentioned (as mine is), your hot water bill will more then double....actual numbers will vary based on location.
Here is a site to figure out your numbers....http://energy.gov/eere/femp/energy-cost-calculator-electric-and-gas-water-heaters-0#output

How about a gas powered mod? Electric water heaters manufactured sfter Jan this year are more efficient. Still not cheaper than gas but better than they were. In real life I play a plumbing pro in a home improvement store.

One of the reasons we wanted that whole-house filtration system was to get rid of, and prevent, the sediment problem -- in the first 3 months we owned the filtration system, it removed MORE THAN TEN POUNDS of sediment... the installer said most of that was from the old water heater.

And Bikenstein... don't worry... about reading about Shari's problems with non-licensed contractors, we would NEVER allow anyone to touch any part of our home if they weren't licensed. We're hoping that Jackson EMC has a preferred contractor for the work.

but But BUT think how long that coil would last! Only thing is you would need to have the fire dept. on standby when you dry burn it!

Much much less, and that's taking for granted there will be no fatalities involved! :)

I have installed a few of the new On demand water heaters and really like them! They have two draw backs though, one they do not produce VERY hot water if you are the type that likes a shower that scalds the top layer of epidermis off and two they defiantly require a dedicated circuit of wire the size of your wrist! ;)

It says it's discontinued, and it's out of stock, so I don't suppose they'll be getting more... and it's 29mm... guess it's meant for a 26650 mod. Pretty though!
