Well I guess I'm not technically a n00b as I have been vaping for a year now but I'm new to looking beyond the standard commercial offerings and new to the ECF.
After some research and some conversation here on ECF I decided to replace my year old eGo with a Maxi Roughstack v2 (choosing Army green out of preference) with a pair of AW 18650. Due to what I replaced I will be making all comparisons to my old 900mah eGo. I'll tell you in advance that the good outweigh the bad so I will start with the bad to get it over with.
The Bad: The Roughstack itself is much lighter than I had assumed. The finish is really bad, there are random flecks under the paint. Too few for me to feel it's an intentional part of the finish but to many for it to be a QC oversight. I could actually live with that but there are two major flaws that just drive me nuts. on opposite sides well say the left and the right (for the sake of saying so) there is on the left (button up 510 adapter down) a large clump of the previously mentioned specs on the cap. On the right a scrape in the pain that must have happened while it was wet. The battery does move inside but it's only a little and it doesn't bother me or interrupt the service. One other small thing... with the batteries, the AW label on the pair are stickers as opposed to being a part of the actual red plastic casing. I found this odd as there is no way for me to actually know they are the brand they state. For such a prestigious brand I just found this odd.
The Good: With my same Boge Cartomisers this combination of PV and battery produces a fantastic amount of vapor for a very long time. I've been vaping for 2 strait days and am still on my first charge. The vaping is consistent and great. The Maxi Roughstack v2 fits great in my larger than average hand (kind of like a roll of quarters) and the new button placement bothers me not at all. I'm quite certain that when I feel up to it I could strip the paint off of the unit and either repaint it another color I would like or even just polish it up and all would be quite well.
In summary: The extra $5 for a $1 paint job isn't worth it but the $45 for the unit itself is absolutely worth it if you're ready to take the step beyond the proprietary sealed units like those of Joytech etc. Three days in and I'm completely satisfied with my new unit. I'll see if I can post the pics below. I included my older eGo in one or two for comparison.
