Here is something to try (need other people to verify):

  1. When you use a new coil, put a few drops down the top of the coil onto the wire mesh. To slightly pre-soak the wicking material.
  2. Fill the tank, and let it sit upright for a couple of HOURS (and maybe overnight).
  3. During the "wait" time pick it up every-now-and-then, and roll it slowly at a 45 degree angle around a couple of times looking for bubbles to come out the wick holes.
  4. When no more bubbles show, go to the widest opening on the airflow, put your thumb over the opening and suck HARD (like a sucking a thick milkshake through a small straw). You should see more bubbles, do it a couple more times.
  5. Now fire it up and take a hit.
You'll get the crackling sound of the juice being vaporized, but hopefully you may not get the popping and spitting up through the chimney into your mouth. I know this all sounds counterintuitive, but I think it's that since the Atlantis uses a much thicker wick, it just takes longer for the juice to fully saturate and not get any air pockets in the wicking material and onto the inner cotton layer.

I don't believe you need to soak it overnight, or really more than a few minutes. There's really very little wicking material, and if you saturate the coil head before you fill it, as recommended, it's ready to go in short order after a restricted primer puff or two. Notice I said saturate, not "lightly pre-soak". Get it wet, put a drop on each of the juice inlets too. Do it just like the big boys do with RDA and RTA builds. Wet. Juicy. Messy even.

It's also a good idea to be sure the juice inlet holes are visible in the chimney crenulations once it's screwed down, just to give displaced air an easier path to the top of the tank.

I don't do anything crazy with the wicking material either. I pretty much just take the head and add drop by drop of juice until I see it soaking the wicking material...especially through the side juice ports. Once I see the wicking material color change due to the juice, I just fill the tank and wait all of a minute before I go nuts with it. This is more to not burn the ceramic material than anything.

I originally believed that it only took a few minutes to saturate, but I tried my above suggestion, and I was quite surprised at how long it took for the bubbles to stop coming out of the coil openings. It literally took a couple of hours.

I was also worried that I might over saturate the coil after the "sucking', but again I was surprised that more bubbles came out of the openings. I was even more surprised at the end when I finally fired the coil it wasn't soaking wet and messy. I just ended up with a nice and smooth hit. No popping or spitting. Just a quiet sizzle of vapor production and great flavor.

Which is why I posted above, I'm just looking for other people who are willing to try what I posted and get their feedback.

The whole idea of this came up on another forum, about someone getting black flakes on top of the wire mesh in the coil. They finally determined that it was the cotton layer next to the heating wire getting burnt because they hadn't waited long enough for the juice to fully saturate the wicking material.

Is it normal to get a bunch of pops with the Atlantis tank? I even get splashes of juice through the chimney. This is my only complaint with the Atlantis. If I get this figured out, it's nirvana.

I'm having the same issue as well. Most times it works perfect and I have no issues at all...once in a while I get the popping, which makes me not want to smoke it at all....i tried to see if there was a pattern to when it happens, bit I can't figure it out. I'm smoking at 30w and my juice is either 35/65 or 30/70...
