International Journal of Epidemiology, dyac028, Association between smoking, e-cigarette use and severe COVID-19: a cohort study
Published:
18 February 2022
Abstract
Background
Smoking is a risk factor for most respiratory infections, but it may protect against SARS-CoV-2 infection. The objective was to assess whether smoking and e-cigarette use were associated with severe COVID-19.
Conclusions
Current smoking was associated with a reduced risk of severe COVID-19 but the association with e-cigarette use was unclear. All-cause mortality remained higher despite this possible reduction in death from COVID-19 during an epidemic of SARS-CoV-2. Findings support investigating possible protective mechanisms of smoking for SARS-CoV-2 infection, including the ongoing trials of nicotine to treat COVID-19.
Key Messages
Association between smoking, e-cigarette use and severe COVID-19: a cohort study
This was observed early on in the Covid 19 pandemic.
The lying anti nicotine health agencies such as Bloomberg Philanthropies went on a fraudulent campaign to domonize all tobacco use to suit their bought and paid for agendas
by misleading the public as to tobacco use and Covid19 risks.
Unfortunately this study does not say enough about vaping itself and does confirm that generally speaking smoking itself is still a risk factor for increased mortality even if it does offer some protection from Covid.

Findings support investigating possible protective mechanisms of smoking for SARS-CoV-2 infection, including the ongoing trials of nicotine to treat COVID-19.
Key Messages
Compared with people who had never smoked, current smoking was associated with one-third lower risk of hospitalization, two-thirds lower risk of intensive care unit admission and one-fifth lower risk of death.
- People who had stopped smoking had a 10-20% higher risk of severe COVID-19.
- There was uncertain evidence on the association between e-cigarette use and severe COVID-19 because of imprecision.
- In this study, conducted at the height of English SARS-CoV-2 epidemic, current smoking was associated with higher all-cause mortality
