OK - I mentioned a few posts ago that I was working on a "top-fed" version of this design. My first attempt had a problem with juice leaking down the center tube. I went back to the drawing board, and here's what I came up with.

In this version, you completely eliminate the center tube. Leave the original 510 atty center post in place. Also, no epoxy or thread. Solder a hypo needle (tiny brass tube in my case) to the side of the atty just like in the original design. Solder the 2nd hypo needle directly to the existing center post. I soldered it right into the hole so it forms a seal. Now pin the coil - with no wick - in place.

Next I made a "wick frame" by forming a small piece of wire into a "C" shape. I wrapped the wick frame with silica strands.

I reassembled the atty battery connector (with soldered hypos and pinned coil) and shell. Then I slid the "disc-wick" into the atty shell until it met the coil. Then I slid in a cartridge loaded with juice. I don't recommend a standard-filler cart for this. Use a mod such as PTB or Blue Foam. I'm using PTB and it's working well.

I've been using this for a couple days now and it's working very well with lots of vapor and great TH.

Keep in mind, this is just another alternative of this design with its own pros and cons. I've built and tried the original design and it also works very well.

LOL, man these are tiny, I sucessfully soldered 2 IC legs ontothe 510 to creat the quick disconnect. Here is the results, This will be pushed into a pill fob atty container to complete the homemade atty. :)

Here are the pics,
Dan

i ordered some of the cartomizers "the DUck" is working on. where can i get that ic pin thing? can i take it out of a computer maybe?
Look for some dip sockets in your computer.

5 PCS DIP-8 Circular Hole IC Sockets Outlet Connectors - eBay (item 110587672248 end time Sep-20-10 18:54:30 PDT)

That Joye carto is basically GreenCig style as is KYFlyer67's.

Which is basically a traditional approach that substitutes the fiber loop for the metal bridge. It's also the approach the Germans are using.

The A-1 uses screws like Scuba has, the VR Plug seems to use some sockets with crimp-ons for the coils.

Those 'DIP-8 Circular Hole IC Sockets' may actually work that way (seems like they would nest). It would add about 30¢ to the price of each new coil.

The GreenCig cartos where around 2.5-3Ω. They did produce a ton of vapor.

The Duck showed the sockets but no mention was made of how he actually would use them to swap out the coils.

LOL, it was dark and only the desk lamp on, so the camera was over exposed, but it was a 2.2ohms coil and I heat set it on 4.5vdc for 2 seconds :)
She is ready to rock!

Ok I did the sewing needle/IC pin quick disconnect setup, home made Atty #8 is born :)
Its a boy!

Houston.... We have ignition!

Dan

Dan, I'm confused :w00t:

Is it a boy or a girl?

This thing is gonna go places.

Dan, what guage nichrome are you using? The wire looks quite thick? Or am I just imagining it because of a very small radius on the turns?

It is 34ga nichrome wire, it just looks bigger because I am zoomed in on it as it was wrapped around a needle. So yes very small radius on the turns.

Wow.....

Dan, couple of questions -

I'm assuming that the mouthpiece is just a 510 tip, cut down and glued to the aluminum top?
Is there anything holding the nichrome in place? I think I see a small ball in one IC tube (Head of a pin?)... But not sure...

Only 8? I thought there was more - maybe it's 'cus I've looked at your pics too many times...

It is a mouthpiece of a 510 that has been cut at the shoulder (where it first tapers), no it is not glued just pushed in, friction holds it in place. Those are needle tips cut to 3mm so they set in almost flush to the IC tube. The needle tips hold the nichrome in the tube by pressing them in to the hole, the needle tips press the nichrome against the IC inner wall locking it in place by friction. I use a pair of surgical Curved Halsted Mosquito Forceps, they are the handiest tools for grabing and holding small items. Yes only 8 "Homemade atties" I have rebuilt numerous others.
Hope that helps
Dan

you guys are totally amazing on how you build things. Cant believe all the knowledge on here.
My hats off to all of you that post on here and show what u did, i said it this way so i dont leave anyone out. i didnt just want to mention Dans name as others contribute also.
Someone mentioned that the greencig has this... it sure does as i took many a greencig carto apart. I usually just read these forums and keep quiet and just try to learn but this morn i had to say how good you guys are. Thanks for all the info. who knows maybe i will be able to make one of these eventually but i have 2 left hands. Thats why guys like me buy from guys like you. I hope anyway. Thanks loads

Gotcha...
I just opened up three computers (Dells); looked at sound, video and NIC cards - no IC looking things anywhere.. I guess I will just go with 1/16" brass tubes for now (Hey, it's what I have!)

After futzing last night, and thinking this moring... (Nope, can't chew bubble gum and walk at the same time either) - what Ohms per foot are you using? I just grabbed some from MadVapes - its 27 Ohms per foot, but I see on Jacob's that they carry down to .165 (14 Ga)

Never mind.. I just looked closer... :) 17 Ohms per foot, right?

Yes 34ga is 17ohms per foot, 36ga is 27ohms per foot. I use the 34ga (it is thicker), and use anywhere from 1.25" to 2" depending on the resistance I want. I like an atty that is around 2.3ohms for a 3.7v PV.
That help?

Dan, you never answered my question.....

Is it a boy or girl? ;)

Am very curious where this is going. :pop:

What is the general consensus? Should this "prop" method be combined with the SUCKaTON, top feeding atty or bottom feeding cart?

I guess at the end of the day it may just boil down to personal preference and aesthetics. If you want something small that feels like a real ciggy, the cart or top atty may be best. If you like endurance and lots of liquid holding capacity, the tube juice feed is the answer.

I'm however dying to know how the silica rope is holding out? I gotta get some of that to try.....

LOL, it was a girl, but somthing "Popped" out so we are calling it a boy :)
I built this atty with the idea of using it with the suckaton, it is a perfect match. I like a larger resivoir and the ability to not use batting. The silica is holding up fine I have never had a problem with it and have been using it from the beginning. I have atties that are 2 months old still going strong.
