Why are you stuck with one membership for three of you Jules?

The way our router works, we all have the same IP. Also, my husband and I actually share an email account. It has been brought up several times, 1 account per person, which in my case would actually be per IP since we all have the same one. I used to own a forum and all the computers in my house showed up on there with the same IP.

It seems that the majority only want one account per person. I know I sound like a broken record here, lol but the per person thing, for my circumstances, really means that all 3 of us would have to use one account and I really don't think that is fair to us.

Believe me, I know how hard it is to battle spammers, although not to the extent that must go on here. I"m sure the SJ will do whatever is best for ECF, and he should do that. Since the other 2 who vape in my house have decided not to join it's not that big a deal anymore.

I don't think that anyone has a problem with three individuals from one address. It's trolls and spammers who make up multiple accounts that are the problem and who get investigated.

Your address wouldn't attract attention unless someone on it was causing trouble.

They certainly wouldn't cause any trouble, they know they would have to deal with me if they did,lol Let's just see how things go and what decisions are made. Thanks for the interest and trying to help with this!

Unfortunately we live in a world where a lot of people aren't happy unless they try to make someone else unhappy. The internet is no newcomer to this, For example; Kids today have taken from playground bullying to cyber bullying. I have even heard accounts of kids committing suicide over such tactics.

What we cannot do, is alter our freedoms in an effort to thwart their troll attacks. In doing so they will have seen this as a victory. What simply needs to be done is to police our own. This is our play ground, and if we are all made aware of what to look for and how to handle it, we will not let anyone kick sand in our face.

I have been reluctant to volunteer as a mod, simply because I enjoy just being a member. But I recognize how fast this forum is growing and the need for extra help. I have replied to SJ's call, and put my bucket in the sand pile. Should SJ need my help, I am more than willing.

Yes, we do need to have a debate about multiple accounts. Should we just make them forbidden and ban any member found to have them instantly?

I'm not sure what legitimate reason anyone could have to have multiple accounts.

Someone pointed out in another thread that multiple accounts may not mean one person.

If you have a husband and wife who use the same computer or other family members that use the same IP, there would be multiple accounts but from multiple people.

How would you figure out if multiple accounts were one person or just several family members?

That's a tough one I would think.

some even have the link in thier signature and dont have to do anything besides act like a normal user there link will be ther anyway.

Personally, i don't see why anybody should have links in their signature, period. I think this function should be disabled. I mean, there's already a gazillion separate forum pages for sellers/suppliers, plus banner ads, and blog pages can be seen via yr member page. When i see comments in the general forum sections by pple with links in their signature, i tend to gloss over them (because i assume they're here for ulterior motives). eg. to make money! or self promotion. For me at least, there's heaps of great info here :) ...but unfortunately i also get a 1800s "gold rush" vibe as well... :(

I am a mod at msn money boards, and here is what we do.

We have a COC(code of conduct) that does NOT allow links posted in ANY signature. Of course we do not deal with suppliers, etc.

Our forum members may post a link, and if it is SPAM it will get the attention of a mod. They control this successfully having 50 mods divided per forum.

I see that this site's issue is way too many forums, meaning categories. So the way I see it you need 200 mods. REALLY

I usually take the 4-8am forum with 2 others. And we have our pot stirrers and aliases that create new accounts when banned. We call them clones. Very easy to figure out as posting style usually stays the same as well as bullying certain members.

Oh the joy of it all!!!

Would be glad to help, and we do allow multiple accts.

My suggestion would be to have no sig link allowed unless you are a paid seller, as it IS advertising, and allow other members to only type in a URL that does not link, so someone would have to "copy paste". For many members who come here to seek info, it would mean them leaving this site and some "manual labor" LOL

Not so many would do that. REALLY SJ, DOWNSIZE your cats.

OK, here's the rule we're going to add, suggestions would be useful before I update the FAQ:

Registrations are limited to one account per person. Multiple registrations are forbidden and, where this is suspected, will be deleted and an IP ban may be put in place.

We accept that there are legitimate cases where two or more people in the same household/workplace may sign up, and this is fine - action will only be taken where suspicious activity is observed.

thats the only real answer.. this isnt a new problem.. its alway been here.. dozens of one liner posts just to plaster your sig link over the place..

now we have user "fanboy" banners becoming the norm... "fanboys" are spammers as well .. ban the automatic linking tricks in very post made and the problem is solved.. until its done the problem will only get worse..

in fact ban all vested interest auto linking tricks... its all spam of one sort or another..

trog

ps... just for a laff a PM i just got... he he he.. a genuine mistake or someone taking the piss.. he he he...
