I've been enjoying my Merlin Mini, again Roxy & Augvape put together another winner. I've had zero issues with it, no leaks during fills, no seepage, it has been performing very well.
Other than trying out the dual coil deck to see how it performs, I've been using it single coil. Main reason being I have quite a few dual coil atties which perform equally as well, or better.
Like any other short chimney tank, I think most of us know you'll need to choose a build that works with your preferences. I'm currently running a twisted .28 @ .7 ohms, 3mm ID. Running it at 45 watts it is pleasingly warm without being too hot. The build matches my fully open airflow very well and produces a nice thick tasty experience. Nice and smooth, no harshness at all, wicking has no problem keeping up.
Running a DNA 200 based device I've also had no issues with stability in Temperature limiting mode.
I quite like the increased size of the fill slots, and not having to worry about the o-ring falling out like the original Merlin.
Fill slot size has been increased from the original 11 x 3mm to 14.5 x 4.5 mm making it much easier to use some of the newer bottles, and less worrisome when using a glass dropper.
Here is a picture of showing differences in the top cap. Note the o-ring placement, and size of fill slots. While not everyone may agree, I find these two changes very positive.
Now on to a little commentary regarding Juice Flow control. While you can sort of close the juice ports to slightly slow flow of heavier viscosity liquids by turning the tank slightly the Merlin Mini has no JFC.
After looking closely at the design you can see Augvape never intended it to have one. The inner chamber has a machined ring which allows flow regardless of whether you see the actual deck ports or not.
Had they left this machined ring uncut then you could consider it a JFC. However that is not the case. The Merlin Mini does not have a faulty JFC, it simply does not have a JFC at all. It only really functions as such when using very thick liquids and even then has very little effect. Thinner liquids = no effect at all.
JFC, or lack of, can be argued on both sides, a well designed atomizer and it tends to be a superfluous feature more often then not. It does however make filling when wicking is not optimal easier. Arguments can be made both ways, personally makes little difference to me, having one tends to make me slightly lazier in getting the wick properly done. If an atomizer is easy to wick it becomes a non-issue, I find the MM pretty easy to wick once you get the proper density down for your usage.
I've had no issue with leaks during fill, if it leaks when you fill it you've probably not gotten the wicking correct.
My top three single coil tanks right now are the Merlin, Merlin Mini, and the Taifun GT III, in no particular order. Can't go wrong with any of them. I'm not a MTL person, so take that into consideration.
I'm hoping Augvape releases a long chimney/glass for this in the future, even in single coil mode it will empty the tank pretty quickly.
