Well, my 2 Eurocents:
Coil: microcoil (no spaced coil) 28g kanthal A1 on 2.5mm rod, 8 wraps. Sits ~1mm above the airhole.
Wick: japanese, muji, whatever the name is, that layered stuff. Cut a ~7mm stip. Remove outer layers. Put it in. Should feel resistance. Too loose is bad. Cut ~9-10mm on each side. Fluff it. Put it in the holes. You should get a bit of those "shoulders", when the wick, starting from the coil, goes a bit up and then down in the hole.
Same with rayon, only rayon can be a bit more tight in the coil.
The wick should always go vertical in the juice hole. Don't stuff it in like noone cares.
Prime it, Put the tank on, close the juice control, fill it 90%. Open it 1.5 turns.
Done.

Cool! Whatever it takes.

The thing about getting things dialed in is that it's hard to diagnose from pictures and words. You have to be there to get a better idea as to what is wrong. That said, the best advice I can ever give anyone is to have them try different things...basically length and width of cotton, coil height, etc... Most of the time people find the sweet spot after messing with it awhile. I think that's what most of us offering advice here do in the end. I'm glad you found your sweet spot. After awhile, go back to what you were initially trying and see what happens.

I agree videos or images it's not like a live review of the problem. I was asking from curiosity, I think it's something with the wire type.
yes, one type keeps the wick away from the deck better than others...

I must say, to my 4 to 6 weeks work trip to China now, the only mod+topper I took with me are the Radius with a Prime w/PEI kit. The sh*it's substantial. It just works.

Since I got my Prime I have never stopped using it. Svoemesto kept dialing it in with every new release until they found the perfect atty (for me). That KM3 is no slouch either.

Agreed. My most used tank since I got it over a year ago. Top class and fits the bill for what I’m after. Which is a tight airflow, reliable and good flavour, leakproof and very importantly small (in height) tank.

Let me, please, ask the question here: is it the Prime's airflow or taste that attracts everyone, or something else I'm missing? And do most folks run it in normal or extended mode? And in extended mode do people find a reduction in taste? I'm curious because all of the discussion on ECF it seems is about the Prime and not the others, or maybe I just not looking in the right place?

I have been blessed to acquire quite a few authentic Kayfuns. However, I am very, very far from a good builder, despite expert help several months ago from one of the members here.

A few weeks ago I decided to build a V4, a Prime, a V5 and a V5.2 aka Squared, which is a beast! I used the same 1.5ohm pre-built coils, but different cotton on some, and the same juice with each. I put a couple on Radii, one on the standard JAC 75 and the V5.2 on a JAC Sandstorm. Watts were 12 to 14, depending on what felt right.

I order to get the airflow open enough I removed the airflow screw from the V4. The Prime I ran wide-open. The V5 and V5.2 were set to the airflow one step down from open.

The taste on the V4 was different from the others, which were all about the same. Its taste was not bad, just different from the others and from what I've been used to with Kabukis, Zeniths and eGo ONE Mega V2s aka Eggrolls.

The difficulty for me was getting the wicking correct. That took several tries on all of them, but eventually I got it to where I was having no issues.

I did not vape the V4 long before washing it out and putting it on back on the shelf. I never figured it to be a long-term player. I just wanted more than anything else to compare it to the others. From a looks perspective I like it the best of any of them.

The others I used hard for a couple of weeks before I decided they probably needed to at least have the wicks replaced. All of them were really, really nasty, so much so in fact that I pulled the coils and washed all of them. And there was lots of gunk at the top off the bells that was difficult to remove. My juice, Space Jam Eclipse, is a coil gunker, but I've never noticed anything this bad before.

Since my time is sort off limited right now, I just went back to my standard Kabukis, etc.

For me and my poor build skills, somewhat due to bad thumb joints, the V5 and V5.2 were easier to build and to wick. However, their insides were also nastier than the Prime.

So when I finally get back to having fun with my Kayfuns, should I just stick to the Prime or also give the others a try again? I'd rather spend a little more time in the build process then have to wash out more often. Thanks, guys, any advice much appreciated.

For me it is really simple, I like the Prime because I can close off the air flow to where I like it, which is on the 3 dots. My two main juices are gunkers, and I don't think they really gunk any faster in these as my other tanks. My :2c:

.....do most folks run it in normal or extended mode? And in extended mode do people find a reduction in taste?
I used my Prime with the standard tank for several months, when I added the larger kit I found no noticable difference in taste or anything else except the refilling frequency. Caveat: my 73 year old taste buds have been abused for many years, maybe this has an influence on my perception of taste.

A few weeks ago I decided to build a V4, a Prime, a V5 and a V5.2 aka Squared.......The V5 and V5.2 were set to the airflow one step down from open.
I'm surprised you were comparing the 5² and MTL tanks, the 5² is most definately not made for MTL. I know this because I was sold a 5² as MTL and I even contacted SvoëMesto who told me in no uncertain terms that it was not. If you are using the second largest and therefore the midddle setting, the aperture is 3.5mm, the largest on the Prime is 2mm. A considerable difference.

The others I used hard for a couple of weeks before I decided they probably needed to at least have the wicks replaced......lots of gunk at the top off the bells that was difficult to remove.

I use 5Pawns Gambit in my Prime, alongside three Kabukies with different e-liquids, and after about a week and sometimes sooner I stick a new wick in it.
I've no idea what causes your gunk but instinct says it is probably the fault of the juice especially considering that the vapour and gunk are being concentrated due to the shape of the bell which the Kabukies don't have.

So when I finally get back to having fun with my Kayfuns, should I just stick to the Prime or also give the others a try again?
I'd stick to the Prime for now, concentrate on getting it right then transfer that knowledge to the others. Maybe trying another juice as well could give you an indication of what's what.
Whatever you do, I wish you success and I have one piece of advice that is guaranteed to work. Mix a good measure of cognac into a glass of port wine and drink it slowly, it won't help your vaping problem, but it will make it seem less important.
