I am wondering a lot about how long I can keep my coils I built, in my case on an rda. Over the course of 3+ months I have pulsed, washed and rewicked every week. I've always used light colored juices and the coil still looks like polished steel, well just about after a cleaning. I hear people saying that they replace their build every 3 months but I was thinking that maybe it should depend on the situation. My thoughts are that if the coil still is working well it can keep going. But maybe there's a time limit, then again maybe not. Will I benefit from replacing it? I know that when one uses dark sweet juices and others that can cause the coil to get gunked up, they definitely need to replace the coil more often. I'm using 22G Kanthal. I am really interested in hearing people's own experience with this so it can give me an idea as to how I should deal with my own experience with my coil building. Thanks. I really appreciate everybody's feedback.

I DIY with very little sweetener, stevia if I must. I always build ss and vape in tc mode. Wire is usually spaced and lately it is all clapton. I wick with rayon so I go 100 - 150ml between re-wicks. 1 dry burn after I build and then I dry-burn and re-wick/clean 3 times before I consider building a new coil. If it still looks like clean ss I will go another, if not I rebuild. Wire, wick and DIY juice is all cheap so if I am rebuilding a little too early it doesn't cost me much. With 6 - 8 mods in rotation going 100 - 150 ml per wick this means I rebuild my coils every 4 - 6 months or so for each atty.

A lot of it depends on how thick your build wire is. 22ga can last a very very long time. 32ga not so much. If you’re doing TC this does not apply though. In general tc coils cannot be dry burned so it’s until the coil gunks up then replace.

SS can be dry burned to clean, but it is the ONLY one. You are 100% correct on the other TC wires. This is why I rarely use the "free" coils included with RDA/RTA devices since most of the time they don't tell you what it's made of.

^^this, with ss just switch to wattage mode at 30 or so watts and dry burn, no issues. cleans up just fine until it doesn't. I just dry burned a wire from 04July, that was re-wicked and dry-burned 20Aug, and I will be re-wicking it tomorrow.

I rewick about twice a week and rebuild about twice a month. My setup is described below. I could go longer intervals but find the vape I want happens with this schedual. I use the same atomizer 100% of the time so thiis reflects 200 ml per month, 7 ml per day of DIY with 1% flavoring and reletively low power compared to the current fashion. Needing big clouds and strong flavors (which I do not) tends to complicate things.

Mine run about 1-2 months on my Unflavored. Rewick only if I singe my cotton on accident (if I bump the wattage in pocket and take a big pull). I run mine 1.8 ohm 28 gauge @5-5.5 watts. I don't vape much flavored so they go longer except I did push a .6 ohm twisted 26 gauge for 6 months before it toasted out on a dry burn for cleaning one time. I would rewick that one every week or 2. So in experience, the thicker the wire, the more durable it is for usage IMO.

My homemade brew has about 17 flavors...a little of this and that. Have used it the last 4 years. I build single coils out of 26gauge kanthal and redo every month to month and a half.
I vape only one flavor at very low percent. I finally tried another flavor at the same low percent. IIt was different but not worth the bother. I use one mod, one atomizer, one build, and one flavor. I do fiddle a little bit with nic percent and make slight adjustments to resistance and power but very little changes. My vape costs so little it's free. I want it to stay that way so I can thumb my nose at the government and their tax dependents.

It’s all about the TC accuracy. Dry burning SS coils makes them less and less accurate because you’re burning carbon.
True you can do it a couple of times before it gets so in accurate it’s unusable, but not the dozens of times you’ll see from a kanthal coil or an SS coil used in VV. This is why I said generally

And you can do that only a couple times before you have problems

I use SS316L in 26awg at .6 ohm. The coils would no doubt last for months but I rewick them at least every 2 weeks and replace the coil once a month. Wire is cheap and I prefer a fresher coil. The SS can be dry burned to get off gunk by pulsing under TC but prefer not to do that more than once or twice at most.

Have switched to Rayon for wick and took one out to look at after about 120 ml of ejuice. The coil was gunked some but the wick was still white and clean. So may have to figure out another way to get gunk off coil without rewicking.
