ok so right now I had a dna 40 mod with 2 18650s I dropped it something happened it shorted out started smoking and burned up my negative wire. So I am going to build it in another mod, My question is will the quality of the vape be the same with just one 18650. My understanding is that having 2 was just for battery life?

Yup. Should vape the same. If you use cheap batteries having them paired can increase their maximum amp output but otherwise the paired batteries just give double the batytery life.

With a Dna chip or other regulated chips that just require one batt. However on a mech or mosfet mod it will split the load a bit.
