Lithium ion batteries do best if they are not allowed to discharge completely and are not left fully charged for long periods of time. They actually last longer if you charge them more often. In a regulated device you can let them go until the device shuts down. When I was using those, I would charge before that happened if it was convenient. Most of those devices will stop the battery at about 3.3 - 3.4 volts.

In my mechanical PVs I try to get the battery out at 3.6 - 3.7V. Typically by then performance is off and I can tell they are getting low, but I've been doing this for a while. Never let them go below 3V. 2.5V is stated for most batteries as the lowest they should go, but once they hit 3V, it does not take very long at all to get to 2.5V.
