When battery life is discussed on this board, statements such as "x battery lasts me 4 hours." are often used. Am I to interpret this as 4 hours of actual vaping? Also, if I have a fully charged Joye 510 battery just sitting on my desk, will it lose its charge?

EDIT: What do people mean when they say "x battery lasts y hours."? Do they mean,

A: I vape off this batty periodically over a y hour period and then it dies.

OR

B: I get y hours of actual vaping from this battery.

Other than big battery mods you are not going to get 4 hours of hard vaping from a battery. As for a battery sitting on your desk, LI batteries seem to hold a charge unattended longer than most other rechargeable types. If your battery is in good shape it should hold most of it's charge at least a week in my experience.

Depends on the battery your referring to. Most user comments about battery life are based on how many hours they were able to vape and are totally dependant upon their vaping habits. (Occasional puff vs never leaves the hand)

For example, read in another thread that at constant output, 510 batteries last approx. 5 mins and eGo/Tornado batteries last approx. 30 mins. How long the battery will work for you before requiring recharge depends solely upon your usage.
