I am looking for a Tutorial where i can charge my batteries with USB connection and vape while charging. That doesnt mean it needs to be a TRUE passthrough, only pulling from the USB plug when its plugged in, But i do want to be able to vape WHILE it's charging.

Anyone have a Tutorial and a link to the parts i will need? I dont even know what to call them to search effectively!

Thanks so much, everyone :)

This is Great, but i am way to much of a newbie for something so complex. I dont even know what to type into the search engine when looking for the usb input part. I tried USB input, usb chip, usb charger, for some reason i never find what i'm looking for. Your mod is insane, i would love it, in fact i was telling my brother about it earlier today before you even responded with the link lol. I would love to make it, but i would need really newbie based step by step instructions and part lists so i could find the parts needed etc.

If you can help me with that, then fantsatic! I would love to make a mod as absolutely astoundingly beautiful in all its rough hewn glory as this one lol

I love the voltage meter, but maybe for my first try i should leave it out becaise i'm worried i'll get overwhelmed. What do you think?

Yes leave out the meter for a first mod.

The neat trick with the one I posted is it can be charged with an e-cig charger. Like one you would charge an eGo with. It's an eGo connector on one end, a regular 510 connector on the other end. I used an unprotected cell and a protection circuit board, but a protected 18650, 18500, or similar cell culd be used with a battery holder. You vape, it charges, you disconnect, it's a battery mod. Good plastic box would work. SOme people put LEDs, Meters, and put the charger all inside.
Put this is a simple box mod, and the charger hooks up just like a eGo (to it's own charge port).

Here's another photo. I didn't put the protection board in this photo, but if you used a protected cell and holder instead of the tabbed cell and extra board these are the parts. Notice the eGo charge, USB extension cord, and cigar lighter adapter :)

You can search the list of threads in this section of the forum, read turotials on MadVapes site.

Study the pictures, be able to identify the various parts, which end is up for the parts that have an UP end :)
Most simple 3.7 volts mods use the same schematic. learn to read the schematic, draw it out yourself, plan your mod before you start. You can learn about parts, from the catalogs of companies that sell parts. Free knowledge. They show pictures, give sizes, sometimes give specifications, and typical applications.

You can search these typical sites for parts,

MPJA.com
allelectronics.com
Digikey.com
Madvapes.com
MCMelectronics.com
and many more
Radioshack.com
Batteryspace.com
The customsabershop.com

I hope most of the links works, didn't check my spelling.

Good luck

You can use one of these or these to add USB charging to a single cell mod.

Don't think anyone has posted a tutorial on how to use these parts. Pretty simple though, USB in and two wires out, one to battery negative and one to battery positive. Polarity must be observed.

Adding USB charging to a dual cell mod is tricky. Nobody has actually posted a mod with it that I know of.

Thank you guys. I hope i can figure this out. It seems like i should be able to manage, though with only a single cell i can really only reach 3.7v right unless of course i'm using the new 4.8cell NiMH that madvapes.com started selling.

Everyone here is so helpful, i really appreciate it tremendously!

Standard Li-Ion cells are 3.7V nominal. They come off the charger at 4.2V, drop a third of a volt quickly, then fall off evenly as they discharge. The cutoff for charging is around 3.2V. NiMH cells are 1.2V nominal. They come off the charger about 1.5V, drop a small amount quickly, and fall off evenly. Recharge is usually required around 1V.

Li-Ions have better voltage delivery under heavy loads. NiMH batts are not as good at delivering power so they drop more voltage when powering an atomizer. A Li-Ion will deliver voltage close to nominal when powering an atomizer. A NiMH pack will deliver somewhat less than nominal pack voltage when powering an atomizer. The issue exaggerates with lower resistance so you're pretty much limited to standard resistance with NiMH packs.

Li-Ion and NiMH use a completely different charging scheme. Also, there are two types of Li-Ion chargers, 3.2V ones and 3.7V ones. The 3.2V Li-Ion cells are less common as well as the chargers, but people do use them in e-cigs for 6V operation with 2 cells in series.

Using the wrong charger with the wrong battery could be disasterous so, for example, you want to make sure you charge your 3.7V Li-Ions with a 3.7V Li-Ion charger and your NiMH batts with a NiMH charger.

I'm not aware of any NiMH charging modules like the 3.7V Li-Ion ones I linked to, but for NiMH, you could likely find a wall wart type of unit that would allow you to use a dedicated jack on your NiMH powered mod. Unlike Li-Ion, there's no issue with charging NiMH batts in series packs. NiMH pack chargers are common and inexpensive, but I haven't seen any USB powered ones. A 4 cell NiMH pack charger needs at least a 7V input and USB is only 5V.

Keep in mind that you do sacrifice some some size and performance with NiMH. However, NiMH is safer, cheaper, and can be more convenient. The Li-Ion batts perform better, but they have their caveats.

Okay, best of luck with it.

All the how-tos are found in forum threads. For a NiMH mod, the best how-to is the Puck. For VV mods using a dual Li-Ion cell configuration, the Poorvari, the Evercool, and the OKR-T are the best ones. Those terms are in the titles so you should be able to find them with the forum search. They're either in the general mods section or the battery mods section.

There are lots of other how-tos, like touch switches, booster mods, built-in charging, etc, but there are too many to list and I don't recall all the titles.
