Another 40+ year smoker here. It did take me about a month to completely quit smoking, but that's fine by me. I cut back by first limiting the smokes to the most important ones, for me that was first thing when I got up and right after meals. Then I ran out of cigarettes, and it was cold out, and I just didn't get any more.
It has been over 6 months now, and even during a very high stress period I didn't even want to smoke. Something I sure couldn't say the other times I quit.
I started with iTaste VV V3s (small but kind of strange looking) and have since added an MVP2 -- great even if it doesn't look or feel at all like smoking. For me it has worked better to establish this as something completely different.
I'll also chime in on liquid. Start small but with variety, different brands, flavor groups, pg/vg ratios. The liquid is the most important part and you need to find at least one that you really like. And it may be one that you thought you would hate. After you've got everything else down would be the time to look into mixing your own.
It is encouraging to hear from all ex 40 year smokers. I will also be a very happy person if I can quit in a month.
