Well I am such a NOOB and have been waiting to post my tale as kind of an introduction. I have a new Titan 510, manual batteries, PCC and a shoe box of juices - OK I am scared of FDA and stockpiled "a little"...haha. I know this will save money in the long run compared to the cost of analogues and associated health effects. I studied all the experts advice on what equipment to get and what flavors/suppliers were the best - how to work the dang thing and how to mix and fill....whew.

So how did I do? Well I went a little cautious and didn't get the extended batteries cause I wanted to make sure I liked e-cigs and I wanted the PCC. I was smoking 2 packs of kretek analogues a day ($15) and was a little skeptical since I have tried everything to quit and was going broke. Today is day 5 with no analogues - no cravings for them - and wow I love vaping. So I got a PCC for charging but with my newbie infatuation it can hardly keep the batteries charged fast enough!! Does this vapefest taper off my hubby wants to know!! I'll have to get the better batteries and maybe a passthrough soon?

So I love to DIY and drip but it has been a learning curve. I got my cart mods done - blue foam and straw. However, I have had a hard time not flooding my atty and getting squirted on the lips with ejuice - it wasn't pretty for a while . I figured out that I can't vape the same way that I took those long hard lung busting drags on analogues and I had to give the atty time to warm up the juice too. I also learned that when my batteries get low (before they blink) to quit using them cause that is when the ejuice isn't vaporized enough. I also had to learn not to put my fingers over the vent holes for the atty and hold the e-cig horizontal. For some reason I had the habit of vaping with the tip of the e-cig pointing to the floor and this helped to flood the atty. When I top off my cart it seems to work better if I let it sit on the table for a few minutes for some reason. But hey I didn't lose any attys or batteries in this learning process and didn't create the burnt to a crisp taste either!! So finally on day five of vaping, I am getting somewhere with the equipment and loving the flavors. :D

So ejuice-wise I researched everyone's advice - most of the time it turned out to match my taste. I looked like a kid at Christmas that just got a chemistry set with my table full of bottles. I found some cool syringes and med spoons measured in ml at Toys R Us in the baby medical isle while Xmas shopping. I tried my first recipes in drops so I wouldn't waste fluids in the med spoons and this seemed to help in getting the mixes just right. When I finished perfecting a tasty flavor I just converted the drops to mls and made a bigger batch in an amber bottle+dropper from the health food store. I got flavors from 3 suppliers and they were all on sale - thank goodness ;). I stuck to trying flavors/suppliers that were popular by the majority of people on the forum here.

RY4, 555, Black Cherry and decadent flavors Black Current-Passionfruit-Menthol (TW), Orange, Apple, and Clove are my favs. Coffee and chocolate were a little too rich for me by themselves in VG and I didn't really like the Loranns flavors unless I mixed them wrong for VG - too sweet and strong. I read all about getting a higher mg of nicotine and then cutting it down to what you thought would be a good strength so I ordered mostly 26-36 mg. I also read all the problems with PG and since I have chemical sensitivities I avoided using it to cut after the first try and harsh reaction. Part of the problem with getting my 501 just right was using the VG to cut and it was a little thick. So then I learned to use flavors without nicotine and a little vodka :pfor thinner with the VG and so far so good. Someone on the forum said the vodka was OK for the atty if in very small quantities. I got extra attys so that my flavors wouldn't affect one another when I didn't want them to (e.g., menthol, coffee, clove). I have used empty RX bottles labeled with the name of the DIY flavor and they are just right to hold the atty, cart and small teeny drip bottle (TW) for that flavor. This is a convenient pkg to grab and go and put it in your pocket or purse. I have my charged extra batteries in a small convenient flip case too as backup for my PCC.

I did over-estimate my need for strong liquid nicotine a little and got a little edgy 8-oat first because I was using a mixture at about 18 mg all day and excited to taste all the flavors. I found that I could back off and use some 6-11 mg in between to even me out. I have had a little cravings here and there but it is only for vapor and not analogues. In fact I tried to puff on an analogue just to see if I got a DIY recipe right and almost puked at the taste  - it was like licking an ashtray on the floor of a bar. Never again!!

I am feeling better already - my lungs don't hurt when I get up in the morning, my taste/smell senses are coming back. I am not coughing up goup anymore. Even though I am chemically sensitive and have had bouts of chemical induced asthma from a sick building I haven't had any reaction to ejuice with some PG as long as it is cut/mixed with VG. I don't care for a stronger throat hit like the PG had anyway - surprising since I was a chain smoker.

So thanks everyone for all the great advice - this forum is an incredible resource for NOOBS like me. I know there is still much more to learn from all of you.

Great way to start out there. I love good 510 stories. And sounds like you are on your way to being a great member here from what you already know. Don`t know that I`ll bother mixing my own I got a sister that really seems to be going that way.

This forum is a wealth of knowledge for those that take the time to read it.

Very good intro and testament!

Does anyone else find it kind of odd that the FDA is more concerned about a product that is virtually harmless and WONT kill you versus a product that HAS BEEN?

..........just sayin :|

I've actually got a friend who refuses to use e-cigs because they aren't FDA approved, regardless of how often I tell him the FDA is full of it - but he keeps on smoking analogs because he does know what's in them... even if its 2k+ chemicals and poisons. He's stubborn and aggravating.

In reference to the rate of vaping that you mentioned.. Yes, it does taper off but it is different for everyone. Some take months.. others days or weeks.. It all has to do with you adjusting to the method.. figuring out the ins and outs.. and making a conscious effort to control your reduction.
That said... Let me reiterate a bit.. It all depends on whether you have started this to just quit analogs or quit all together. The usual conversion between vaping and the drags you take from a cig are 8-10 vapes to one cigarette( adjusted according to .08 of a mg per cig, 20 cigs per pack would equal 16 mg. per pack)... To start off with, 1.)most use higher mg just to reward the use of vaping rather than smoking analogs.... 2.) Then, they find that after the initial break in.. since they vape all the time(chain).. They reduce the mg of nic way low and continue to chain vape or they control their urge, choose a moderate level of nic by mg, and successively work that mg down over select periods of time. 3.) Others, who choose to quit analogs but stick with nic, Just simply do whatever they please.

The effects of nicotine - how nicotine affects the brain and the body and why people get physically addicted to nicotine.

This site has some good info on what nicotine does to the body and I would advise that the level of mgs that you decide to stay with be as low as you can get away with, without having headaches, nausea, diarrea, or dizziness. The buzzed feeling when we all first started smoking is one of the exact felings you do not want constantly... This is systematic indication of poison to the system from high levels of nic. I know most of this is common sense.. I am just sayin... keep all of this in mind.

I am i the stay with nic group... I am going to work myself down to 5 or 6 mg... stay around 2.5 to 3 mls a day... and thats all I wrote.

Happy Vaping,
Tom

P.S. By the way, I just noticed that your in Florida... Tampa here.. what about you.

Tom,

Thanks for your great advice in tapering the nic down - I do believe that LESS IS THE GOAL and that is in the plan!! My hubby quit analogues cold turkey 3 years ago and is so pleased I am on my way too. I have smoked analogues for thirty years - only stopping briefly during 3 pregnancies so this is a real miracle he is seeing happen.

So I live in Tallahassee and usually come your way to go to concerts or medical specialists not available up here. If there are any good e-cig suppliers down there let me know. I'd like to see the Prodigy v2 or a Chuck up close and personal.

Thanks to all for your kind comments.

Regards

I will keep a look around for close distributors for the Prodigy and Chuck... Another good place to look here on the forum for cheap prices on both of those .. is the classified section. They may be used or New... but most of the time .. buying one cheap will give you an idea of whether you like it or not.. and then you can make a better decision on spending the money to order bran new and get what you want (with the possibility of having spare parts from the cheapy).

As far as suppliers.... The only one I know of because I use them.. Is Totally Wicked- USA, which is based in Bradenton, Fl.. Just an hour and a half away from me. I will say they are rather pricey but their equipment is well constructed and I like their regular tobacco and Marlboro juice( although juice is very subjective to one's own taste). The only negative to Totally Wicked(TW) USA is that they are a little lacking in the customer service department ( very short with respect towards patronage and hasty).. Although the owner of TW( as the main branch for TW is in the UK) recently made a trip to Bradenton to straighten this branch out and get the CS department running according to his wishes. I have never had a problem out of them.. I did get one bad atty straight out of the box... but I say no problem, because they shipped two atties to me overnight, free of charge to replace the broke one. I do recall in other threads that there are a few subsidized distributors for other companies down here close, but I do not know of them or order from them because they are not sanctioned on this forum. With all the fraudulent companies out there, like Smoke Everywhere... I would rather stick with the vendors that are listed on this site that are somewhat trusted.

I hope you had a Great holiday and May all your wishes come true/// Well, you may have already gotten your wish - Make another one... LOL

I have to put in a good word for Totally Wicked because I too read some folks having problems with the new TW US startup. I ordered through TW UK at 30% off because I missed the US sale. They said that they would put in a US plug for the charger. Well they put the wrong one for my PCC. I called TW US (on New Years Eve) and asked them if they could just mail it and not only did they send it but they also sent me the free tin that UK was out of stock. Maybe TW UK sent a couple of those "nanny" types over here to get their customer service act together!!

By comparison the TW multi-pack TW batteries (5), attys (5) and Titan 510 have not given me any trouble with my learning curve abuse. Their decadant flavors are so concentrated that it only takes a few drops...and are incredible alone or with used to cut other nicotine flavs. So to me quality and "safe" products are important - I would love to only buy USA or UK manufactured juice. It concerned me that a few folks complained that cheaper companies were selling ejuice that tasted more like perfume and probably is!!! None of us should forget the "oops" imported food or Rx products that have caused illness or killed pets, babies and sick people.

The other issue is TW is trying to have all their products conform to what FDA might expect with lab tests/packaging/labeling etc. This is an expense that TW has to absorb and still stay competitive. TW hopefully will benefit the entire e-cig community by working with FDA and trying to keep them off our backs as much as possible.

Yes my "biggest" wish came true....hahaha so LOL!!! I'll take your suggestion and work on my second wish...that all of this controversy with FDA will go our way. Need another Miracle on 14th Street !!
