Okay, so what are the best TV shows?

By "best" I mean your favorites, regardless of how popular or influential they are or were. Preferably, tell us why.

I'll start.

Firefly (In the proper order)

Probably one of my favorite shows ever. The characters are quirky and fun and the setting of the universe is just enjoyable and gritty. The unsettles, by-the-seat of your pants setting is refreshing.

Dexter

The main character is a serial-killer. His sociopathy and darkness allows him to reveal aspects of humanity (social interactions, sense of justice, relationships and love) that carry so many pre-defined notions and yet stands them on their head by his inability to (as he thinks) grasp them. It sort of echos every moment I've felt annoyed dealing with people I didn't want to, the disconnect that comes when someone leaves my life, et cetera.

How I Met Your Mother

The show is funny in general but in watching all of the episodes, you can tell (or at least they did a great job if this is NOT the case) that from start to finish that certain things were destined to happen which leaves a lot of room for running-jokes and anticipation.

Well last year at this time I would have said, hands down the best show ever was the show "LOST" but since the horrific final season and even more atrocious finale I cannot say that.

Right now I love:

Grey's Anatomy
True Blood
Vampire Diaries (No I am not into Twilight)
Fringe

And I am a bit shamed to admit this but I stay home on Friday nights to watch "Ghost Adventures" on the Travel Channel. I am so addicted. It's my guilty pleasure.
Big Love

I don't watch much network TV. Mostly movie and documentary channels. However, I do watch House MD. But I still struggle to understand the premise which says this doctor is so good, he gets away with breaking rules, being nasty, and jeopardizes lives. Yet....in every episode, he is wrong 3 times before he gets it right. That's a 75% failure rate! Imagine if he was your doctor....LOL :D

I'm with you on Dexter, although I thought this season was a bit disappointing.

Curb Your Enthusiasm
Nurse Jackie
Chopped
Top Chef
The United States of Tara was also really good- hopefully, there will be more seasons of it
Washington Journal (I know, most people probably wouldn't consider that entertainment TV, but I like it)
Real Time with Bill Maher (for those of us who enjoy the occasional F-Bomb with our politics)

Mainstream tv --
House
NCIS
The Mentalist
Those are about the only network shows I watch at all. For me, the CSI franchise has died, as have all the incarnations of Law & Order. I haven't found a new sitcom in years that I like.

A bit out of mainstream --
Psych
White Collar (I believe the new season starts next month??)
Burn Notice (season just ended)
Covert Affairs and the one about the doctor in the Hamptons (name escapes me) are watchable.

Great but obscure --
Eureka (SyFy Channel -- it's about a typical guy in a town full of geniuses -- a great lot of fun even if you're not into science fiction.)
Stargate Universe is watchable, but only just. They took a wonderful sf franchise and turned it into a mundane and predictable soap opera.

Mostly, I watch TCM.
