What I did was find a bolt that I can screwed the atty onto. Then hold onto the far end of the atty and the far end of the bolt and start wiggling back and forth while pulling. Eventually the atty will separate. As the connector is working its way out, make sure the coil assembly is moving along with it otherwise you will break the connecting wires. This procedure comes in handy when you are trying to repair an atty that had a wire break off the connector.

The other thing I do is dissect the atty when it dies to find out the cause. In this situation I use a small file and cut the atty's shell near the connector. With the bolt attached they easily pull apart.
