My biggest niggle about increasing the size of a coil beyond 1/16" ID is that you lose the ability to position the coil at an elevation above the deck to fine tune vape preference.

Once the coil gets larger in diameter, it is what it is with regards to placement - the only way to go is up.

Additionally I find that the top of the wick on thicker diameter coils dry quicker than those in smaller diameter coils.

The beauty of it all is personal preference and what produces the best vape for your needs. :)

One of the reasons I like rebuilding coils and DIYing my own juice, is that it opens up so many sets of options. I change flavors a lot. I've never had a single 'all day vape'. So, with the idea that I need a universal build that will work with all the juices I make, I can do one of two things. I can narrow down a 'standard' build, or, I can alter my juice recipes to suit whatever that 'standard' build happens to be. For me, I have found that dual 5/64 (2mm) coils, with 6 wraps each, with 27g kanthal, gives me an end result of .45 to .5 ohms, total, depending on leg length, etc. I settled on 27g because I felt that more wraps with 26g heated up a little too slowly; and less wraps with 28g was a little quick. 27g seems like a nice compromise.
As for altering the juice, I've found that having a bottle of unflavored 50VG/50PG juice around, at the same nic level of my flavored juice, 6mg/ml, allows me to 'tune' the juice to the build. I make some juice for other people, who might use various other devices, like Kayfuns, single coil RDAs, regulated devices, etc., so the stuff I make for others generally is a little strong for my own use, and I find that I have to cut it down with my unflavored.

My preferred build has always been 8/9 wraps on a 1/16 mandrel using 28ga wire. BUT....

I built my first Mundy's Magic wire and I am playing with it. I still use a 1/16 mandrel but the twisted wire is larger in diameter overall. This does make it harder to position on an atty, especially the smaller ones. With an RM2 is is easier to work with and vapes like a monster using 4 wraps and 2mm RxW. The surface area with this wire build is huge due to all the crevices.

I can see the benefit of larger diameter wire for surface area but I still prefer working with a small tight micro coil. Being able to position exactly where you want it is important to me for MTL hits and smaller air holes.

For those that prefer direct lung injection with WAO air holes a larger diameter coil might be your happy place.

i make 240ml of vapable juice at a time, so it's easier to change coils than juice. I have used parallel 27g duals, but they clog in 2 days. So i use 26 or 24g ugly coils and 3mm RxW, which are easier to keep clean (by which i mean burn the crap off - cleaning coils is for the desperate).

I have always said that microcoils are excellent for new people to get reliable results. Wrap this on this - you get this. Every time.

Imagine for one second that you are advising a total noob to mechs - what would you recommend? Microcoil on a RM2, AW battery, noalox, whatever juice you like.

I started to get all cocky because I can make my own coils now and even made twisted ones. Then today I was slapped back into reality when I spent all morning attempting some Mundy's Magic Twisted Ribbon coils.....what a total FAIL! :glare: A huge disaster. Since I'll never know...can anyone tell me if they are as good as some say they are?

I happened to get a piece of the MM wire from a very generous member in a trade deal. I was up in the air about using it (gnarly stuff lol) so tonight I decided to give it a try. It's literally everything I heard it would be. 3 loose wraps on a 2mm bit gets me around .5 stuffed into a cyclone- flavor is outstanding and vapor is amazing. I normally take 6-7 second drags on a dual coil setup at .7 but I'm down to 3-4 seconds at best with the MM wire and it's all I can do to keep up. I'm definitely going to give this wire a go once I find the .7 x .06 ribbon to make it. If you get a chance, try it out!

I have vaped on a MMTC for two complete days now. I do enjoy it for sure. There is no doubt it is a PITA to make but I will keep a Divo and RM2 ready and give it some more time. Right now I say yes it is worth the hassle.

Shoot me a pm with your address and I will make some more and send you a piece. I break and throw away more than I use but eventually I get a section of usable wire....lol

I've also been playing around with coil sizes and different configurations. What I've found to be my favorite coil setup for the Rm2, Rm3 and BF Helios is a 28 ga dual twisted wire 4/5 wrap on a 2mm screwdriver, .5 ohm. Plenty warm but not too hot. Heats up nice and fast and tons of vapor and flavor.

I'm OK with big coils where I have room for them. Like Super_X said - adjusting position is important. I can make a giant coil in my RM2 and have plenty of room to move it if I need to and no fear of getting careless with it touching the deck if it's really big. The dual coil rm3, on the other hand, doesn't provide a lot of extra space. The coils have to be pretty small just to be in there, let alone move them around a little.
